Rayel MacDonald: a community remembers

Almost a year has passed since the tragic death of Rayel MacDonald and the hospitalization of her friend, Alysha Mullett. MacDonald and Mullett attended TRU Williams Lake together and were studying to become nurses.
On April 22, 2012, the girls had attended a local event and were walking with a group of people. They met with another group of people on the opposite side of Carson drive and when they attempted to cross Carson Drive (from north to south) they were struck by a pick-up which had been travelling downhill. The truck, an older model smaller pick-up, fled the scene.
BC Ambulance Service attended to the victims. Rayel MacDonald, 20, was pronounced deceased at the scene and Alysha Mullett, 20, was in critical condition and was airlifted to Vancouver General Hospital with life threatening injuries.

At approximately 10:30pm on April 13, the Williams Lake RCMP received a request to assist the fire department with a fire in an apartment at 655 Borland Street, the Parkview Apartments.
Police attended immediately and upon attendance observed a 3rd floor apartment filled with smoke. Police were able to clear the building and account for the tenants while firefighters tended the fire.
Della Durrell, who has lived in the building for about 9 months said she was on the second floor when she heard the smoke detector beeping. She went up to the third floor and saw smoke coming from under the apartment door. Once the door was opened, she said she could see a couch smouldering inside the apartment. Della returned to the second floor to get a fire extinguisher, gave that to another tenant who used it on the couch while she went to the first floor to get a second extinguisher. The apartment was unoccupied at the time of the fire and there were no injuries reported.

Spring has sprung. And, with the springing of spring comes the return of the bears. The first bear sightings of the season were reported in the Williams Lake area this past weekend.
Sergeant Len Butler of the Cariboo-Chilcotin Conservation Service wants to remind everyone there are things they can do make the summer more … bearable.
Every year, there are complaints about bear activity in the vicinity of homes and population centers, and every year, bears end up being killed by authorities. Last year alone, there were 1,576 problem wildlife complaints in the Williams Lake / Quesnel / 100 Mile House regions.

A pay-it-forward act leaves young Williams Lake family feeling great.
Last Saturday Tony and Stacey Pitsos took their young sons, Theo and Thad, to the Salvation Army Thrift Store to look for some toys. While in the store, a woman overheard Tony explaining to the boys that it is important to spend their money wisely. The woman approached the two boys and Tony and handed them $20. She explained that she wanted them to buy themselves something that they wanted.

The Williams Lake Girl Guides and Scouts held a 'Hike for Hunger' on April 13.
The youths carried donated food through town, stopping at grocery stores along the way before ending at the Salvation Army.
Shoplifting complaint turns into drug bust for Williams Lake RCMP

Williams Lake RCMP responded to 65 calls for service over the weekend.
On April 13 at 4:45pm, police responded to Save On Foods for a report of a male who was in breach of his release conditions from court. Police spoke with security personnel at the grocery store who informed the officer that they observed a male inside the store walking around, looking at magazines and other items before leaving out the front doors without purchasing any items. The male is currently on conditions that do not allow him inside any business in Williams Lake without a pre-approved supervisor to accompany him. No theft had occurred. The male was later located and informed that he was being arrested for breach, at which time he fled from police. A brief foot pursuit ensued before the male was taken into custody. He is currently being held for court.
Central Cariboo Search and Rescue hopes to raise funds for TIC’s

A unique, modern and forward-thinking fundraising campaign kicks off in the Cariboo-Chilcotin region today with an online bidding auction.
The Cariboo Regional District’s Central Cariboo Search and Rescue (CCSAR) team is hoping to raise enough funds to acquire at least one Thermal Imaging Camera (TIC) – a very sensitive piece of equipment that is used to detect the differing temperature of objects, specifically people. This camera will enable the CCSAR crews to locate persons who are lost or injured in various scenarios.
Good Samaritan spring cleaning along Dog Creek Road

This afternoon, 68 year old Neil Saunders is taking time on his weekend to clean up the ditches along Dog Creek Road near Mountview Elementary School.
Neil, who has lived in Williams Lake for 41 years said he just wants to make it look nicer. He is being ultra responsible by wearing a high-visibility vest.
Open burning ban comes into effect in the Cariboo tomorrow

The Williams Lake Fire Department helped some residents get a small out-of-control grass fire under control on Woodland Drive this afternoon, at the same time as the 150 Mile House Volunteer Fire Department did the same thing in their area.
Reminder to Cariboo residents, effective at noon on Monday, April 15, open burning will be prohibited across the entire Cariboo Fire Centre to help prevent person-caused wildfires and to protect the public.
City to undertake public consultation on place brand
