what-to-do-summer-2012There is an underground conspiracy at the Station House Gallery, an adrenalin-filled rodeo and mountain race at Nemiah Valley and swimming, art, baseball, live music and shopping to keep you entertained this week.

Friday August 3

It’s time for a rodeo! The 35th annual Nemiah Valley Rodeo, Mountain Race and Gymkhana kicks off today at 11:00am and runs until Sunday at 6:00pm

In Nemiah Valley Rodeo events, $3,500.00 is added for the two-day Mountain Race. Entries will be $175.00 for the weekend and or $100 per day. You can enter during the Rodeo each day before the race. Mountain Race will be during Intermission on Saturday and Sunday, with $800.00 added in Bull Riding and $600.00 added for Bareback, Saddle Bronc, Tie Down Roping, Steer Wrestling, Ladies Barrel Racing, Breakaway Roping and Team Roping. $300.00 is added in for Jr. Steer Riding, $200.00 for Jr. Barrel Racing, Jr. Breakaway and Ladies Goat Tying and Jr. Goat Tying. $100.00 is added for Pee Wee Barrel Racing and Pee Wee Goat Tying, James Lulua Sr. is the announcer for the weekend, with a 1:30 start time daily for rodeo performances, with added time slots at 9:00am if needed.

The Williams Lake Farmer's Market will be held in Boitanio Park every Friday from 9:00am to 2:00pm. The market will include Jerry from Keremeos selling fruit, Julie and Debbie selling veggies, Monica selling soaps, Adrian selling wonderful sausages, Terri and Kathy selling home-baked goods and much more. The market will be available until October 5. They have local crafts, canning, food, live music and many wonderful products from local artisans and producers. Today from 1:30pm to 3:00pm, enjoy another Iceberg Fun Day at Sam Ketcham Memorial Pool.

The Legion holds a meat draw every Friday from 5:00pm-6:00pm until October 31.

Saturday August 4

Come and enjoy the Oliver Street Market today in Herb Gardner Park from 9:00am to 2:00pm with farm-fresh organic veggies, fresh coffee, live entertainment, gift ideas, artists, vendors and more.

There will be a Craft and Flea Market in the 150 Mile Centre parking lot every Saturday and Sunday until September 30, 2012. The market will be open from 9:00am to 4:00pm. Table space costs $10.00 per day or $15.00 for the weekend. See Dianne at the 150 Mile Husky or call 250-296-4515 to reserve a spot.

All are welcome to the Legion’s Saturday meat draw today from 3:00pm-5:00pm.

Sunday August 5

The Vegetarian Supper Club meets on the fourth Sunday of every month. Please bring your favorite vegetarian dish to share in this potluck-style evening and enjoy a food demonstration and health lecture. Dinner begins at 7:00pm at the Cariboo Lifestyle Centre, located at 26 Woodland Drive.

Monday August 6

This week the Station House Gallery features artist Edwin Janzen's exhibit, ‘Conspiracy Case’. While we humans unsuspectingly go about our day-to-day, below the surface the ground squirrels burrow and plot.  This investigation finally peels back the curtain on a hitherto unknown world of crime, terror and drugs. This exhibit is in the Upper Gallery.

Maureen Chappell of Creative Hands offers a summer art program for ages 7 to 16 This nine-week program will feature a variety of techniques to enable students to develop new skills while they work with a number of materials, creating one-of-a-kind projects If you have more than one child who would like to attend, call about a family rate. Tuesday August 6

Free Storytime in Kiwanis Park will be available each Tuesday from 10:30am to 11:00am under the tree. This event is weather permitting and is for all ages. For more information, call the library at 250-392-3630.

Creation Station is an opportunity to come and spend two hours in creative fun at Art 4 Wellness between 1:00-3:00pm in the Delainey Centre. You'll have access to art materials new and recycled, let your imaginations soar in a fun, safe creative space.

Wednesday August 7

There is a Cariboo Memorial Hospital Auxiliary Meeting on the second Wednesday of each month. The meeting begins at 7:00pm in the Board Room on the main floor.

The Cariboo Memorial Recreation Complex Fitness Centre offers free orientations for those adults 55 and older. Registered personal trainer Judy Orosz will provide an orientation to the facility and teach you about how to use the equipment safely, gym etiquette, and what times of the day would be best for you to work out. She will help you gain confidence in using the equipment and answer any questions you have regarding your own fitness. Please call ahead to book your complimentary session. The Boys and Girls Club of Williams Lake, with support from the Blue Jays Foundation, is holding Summer Baseball for families every Wednesday from 10am to noon at the Kiwanis Ball Diamond. This activity is free, is for all ages, and all the gear is provided. Register with David by calling 250-392-5730.

Every Wednesday until August 22nd is ‘Wacky Wednesday’ at the pool from 1:00pm-4:30pm. Each week there is a different theme with all kinds of games and prizes.

Thursday August 8

The Performance in the Park this week is the ‘Ta Daa Lady’ at 5:00 pm and ‘Big Twang Daddy’ at 7:00pm. Bring your chairs, your family and a picnic to Boitanio Park.

The Williams Lake Over 40's Activity Group is a group for singles and couples over 40 with similar and varied interests. Activities may include dinners, hiking, camping, movies etc. We are always looking for more ideas and people willing to host activities. The TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) BC Group 4145 meets every Thursday across from Safeway. The meetings are from 8:45am to 10:00am. For more information phone Corinne at 250-392-4772.

There is a seniors’ lunch on the fourth Thursday of each Month upstairs at the Legion at noon.

The Cariboo Regional District Library in Williams Lake is offering a course in Genealogy on the first Thursday of each month from 2:00pm to 4:00pm. Come to the library front desk to register or call the number provided.

Each Thursday, the Legion Branch 139 hosts Pasta Thursday, a Legion fundraiser. Dinner is from 5:00pm to 7:00pm and includes pasta and sauce, garlic bread, and Caesar salad, all for just $6.00. The Legion would like to welcome the community to participate in this wonderful evening of good food and great company.
