The Cariboo Memorial Recreation Complex is now leading by example to make a healthy choice an easy choice for everyone who visits the facility or participates in its programs or special events. The Williams Lake Joint Committee recently adopted a Healthy Food and Beverage Policy for the facility to meet or exceed the 2007 Guidelines for Food and Beverage sales in BC Schools and the 2007 Nutritional Guidelines for Vending Machines in BC Public Buildings. During the past year a Healthy Food and Beverage committee met regularly to determine how to increase the availability of higher nutrient food choices in the concession and vending machines. As a result, products like granola bars, water, juice, nuts and pita chips are available in the vending machines in the arena and the pool and they are priced competitively. Power Play Concession has a brand new menu which includes whole wheat buns, wraps, salads and fresh soups.

Deborah Radolla, Manager of Active Living, says this has been a collaborative effort between Blackstock Vending, PowerPlay Concession and Tatjana Bates, Interior Health’s Community Dietician. The changes were initiated following patron surveys last February which demonstrated the desire for healthier food and beverage options. “The Complex is not taking away all the ‘treats’” says Radolla. “Everyone needs to make their own choices, but healthier foods are now accessible and these snacks and mini meals give patrons the power to play at whatever activity they participate in at the complex.” Saturday, October 3 marks the official launch of the new menu at Power Play Concession and healthier choices in the vending machines. Between 2pm and 3:00 pm the committee will be serving samples of the new foods available.

Interior Health will also have a display on healthy eating and food for athletes. Committee members will be available to answer questions.
