Fast moving fire doused by residents at Sugarcane Reserve
| News |
On Thursday, September 6, the 150 Mile Fire Department responded to a fire on the Sugarcane Reserve shortly before 4:00pm. The fire started very near one residence and travelled close to a second residence along a hillside.
Joey Thomas, a maintenance worker on the reserve was notified about the fire by residents and called ‘911’. “A little piece of glass was acting like a magnifying glass in the sun and I guess that’s what did it,” Joey stated when asked how the fire started.
Doug McGregor, who lives one house away from where the fire started, was just arriving home as the flames began to spread across the hillside. He and Joey gathered garden hoses and doused the blaze while waiting for the fire department to arrive. “With the strong wind, and because it’s so dry here, the fire travelled approximately 60 feet in 10 seconds,” Joey said. “The 150 Mile Fire Department arrived quickly, but it’s a good thing we had these hoses on it. We stopped it from spreading.”
The 150 Mile Fire Department received mop-up assistance from Cariboo Fire Centre personnel, dousing hot spots to ensure there were no flare-ups.
There were no injuries and no structures were damaged in this incident. The cause of the fire is not confirmed by officials.
