Runaway van injures one, takes second for a scary ride
| News |
At approximately 4:45pm tonight, RCMP responded to a complaint of a runaway vehicle.
A minivan at the top of a steep hill in the Signal Point Mobile Home Park began rolling away from where it was stopped. The open door of the van struck one of the passengers who had been standing on the ground and had not noticed the van beginning to move. The young woman was trapped under the door and dragged for approximately 30 metres until the vans wheels turned and she was released.

Meanwhile, another female passenger remained in the back seat of the van, secured by a seatbelt.
The minivan continued down the hill, bounced over a curb and struck a chain link fence above the rear parking lot of Signal Point Gaming Centre. “Fortunately, the chain link fence stopped the van from going any further,” said Constable Jeremy Roberts.
The RCMP protected the public by parking an RCMP vehicle in the path of the precarious-perched van, in case it rolled further before it could be secured.
The young woman who was dragged by the runaway van sustained minor injuries according to RCMP. The woman inside the van was shaken, but not injured.
What caused the minivan to roll is not clear. It was reported to RCMP that the vehicle had been in ‘park’.
