Just after 6:00pm yesterday a tornado blasted through a two-bay garage at a residence on Chimney Valley Road. Debris was swirled into the air, including a beam weighing close to a ton, dog kennels and half the garage roof, which ended up landing on and demolished a pick up truck.

Karina Howell said that she and her daughter Ashley were watching TV when she noticed all the trees out the windows leaning over almost flat—something she’d never seen before. “Ashley, stay here: a bad storm’s coming,” she said, just before a strange ‘whistling thunder’ sound began rolling through the air.

The tornado hit ‘right out of the blue’, according to Karina. “We walked upstairs and looked out the door to see a piece of wood flying right at us,” she explained. “Debris was carried 100’ in the air---all that stuff swirling in the sky, and over the mountain it went.”

She explained that the beam from the garage was ripped out of the rebar, whipped around through the air, before it smashed through a fence. “The storm lasted 30-40 seconds,” she said. “The wind sucked the lights right out of the back of my truck.”

Neighbors responded immediately, arriving to see if everyone was OK or if they could help. “One of our neighbors was out working in his yard and he saw the whole thing,” Karina continued. “When he saw the dog kennels flying through the air he was horrified, thinking it was our dogs.

“None of the dogs were injured, even though their pen roof was lifted off. Our puppies are all safe—they weigh only a pound each right now, but they weren’t touched.”

Ashley’s pigeon house, with baby pigeons inside, was also untouched, as was her husband Dwaine’s Harley Davidson motorcycle.

She said that the experience was sudden, horrific and unnerving. “Ashley didn’t want to stay last night—she went to her grandma’s,” Karina said. “We are so thankful that God was watching over us and that no one was injured, including all our animals.”
