CRD resolution to raise awareness for accessibility issues
The Cariboo Regional District is taking a resolution to the North Central Local Government Association’s (NCLGA) Annual Conference to raise awareness about accessibility issues throughout the province. The resolution will be tabled during the conference taking place May 5–7, 2010 in Smithers, BC.
In BC and Canada, there are many members of our society affected by accessibility limitations and challenges. In a unique approach to address these issues, the CRD has crafted a resolution that calls for the development of a Provincial Accessibility Designation, similar to the Forest Capital of British Columbia designation administered by the Association of BC Forest Professionals. The two-year designation will help recognize communities that strive to make accessibility a priority and make a difference in the lives of those that are affected by accessibility limitations.
The resolution requests NCLGA to lobby the Ministry of Healthy Living and Sport to implement a Provincial Accessibility Capital designation similar to the Forest Capital of British Columbia. This designation would be awarded to communities or regions within British Columbia that have exemplified commitment to creating all inclusive environments for residents and visitors of all abilities.
