Discussions to address outstanding ice rentals and fees
The Central Cariboo/City of Williams Lake Joint Committee announced today that they are currently negotiating with the ownership of the TimberWolves Junior A Hockey Club to address their outstanding ice rental and other fees associated with the team’s use of the Cariboo Memorial Recreation Complex during the past hockey season.
At the conclusion of the 2009-2010 hockey season, the TimberWolves had outstanding bills for use of the Cariboo Memorial Complex in the amount of approximately $40,000. The Timberwolves had, however, undertaken the construction of a mezzanine within the Complex which enhanced the capital value of the facility. Negotiations are currently underway to determine if a suitable arrangement can be reached between the parties to exchange the value of the mezzanine for the outstanding debt - an arrangement similar to past agreements. In the event that an agreement on the outstanding debt can be reached, the parties will be negotiating a new contract for the 2010-2011 hockey season to ensure the financial issues experienced in the past season are not repeated.
“Having a Junior A hockey team in Williams Lake is definitely an asset and provides a sporting opportunity that many residents and businesses support,” says Joint Committee Co-chair, Mayor Kerry Cook. “However, while we continue to work with the TimberWolves to reach a mutually acceptable arrangement, foremost is ensuring that our taxpayers receive value for their tax dollars.”
Joint Committee Co-Chair Steve Mazur stated “Any new Use and Occupancy Agreement will be structured to ensure the financial issues experienced this past season are not repeated. We sincerely hope that the Junior A hockey franchise can succeed in our community but also recognize the need to protect the interests of our taxpayers.”
