The Williams Lake RCMP are seeking the public's assistance in identifying two males involved in a bear spraying incident nearly two weeks ago.
On March 31, at 1:15 am, the Williams Lake RCMP received a complaint of an assault that occurred in the school yard of Marie Sharpe Elementary. A group of 6 people were sprayed with bear spray by two male suspects.

Deanna Phillips and Karen Springle were among the first to arrive at Tuesday night’s City Council meeting, with opposition signs in hand.
The two had created the ‘Boycott “Republic” of Williams Lake’ page after Karen read about the placebrand slogan on the Williams Lake News and Events Facebook page.
“All the comments I was reading were from people my age who have lived here for a long time – not necessarily the demographics the campaign was looking for,” said Karen. “So, I contacted Deanna about it, who is in the target market they were looking for.”

To bees or not to bees, that is the question in Williams Lake currently
The City of Williams Lake will prepare separate bylaws to allow for the keeping of hens and honeybees in City limits, and hold public consultations on the proposals.
Over the last few years City staff and Council have been asked numerous times about the topics of back yard chickens and beekeeping in residential areas of Williams Lake. Letters have been received from the Central Beekeeping Association and petitions regarding chickens and the most recent request for regulating Honey Bees from Clinton Shane Ekdahl, Founder of “Day of the Honey Bee”, as well as the Food Policy Council.
As a response to these interests staff have researched what other municipalities have done with similar requests and interests.
Revenue-sharing agreements with Mt. Polley to benefit local First Nations
Two new revenue-sharing agreements will enable two Williams Lake-area First Nations to benefit from the expansion of the Mt. Polley mine.
Economic and Community Development Agreements (ECDA) will facilitate the Williams Lake Indian Band and Xatśūll First Nation (Soda Creek Indian Band) to receive a share of mineral tax revenues collected by the Province enabled by the expansion of the Mt. Polley mine, located east of Williams Lake.
“These agreements underscore our government’s commitment to helping First Nations meaningfully participate in, and benefit from, resource activity happening within their traditional territory," says Aboriginal Relations and Reconciliation Minister Ida Chong. "It will help the Williams Lake Indian Band and Xatśūll First Nation build a better future for their own communities, while also supporting a mine expansion that will provide huge benefits to Williams Lake and the surrounding area.”
USW Members at Mount Polley Mine back strike note

United Steelworkers members at Imperial Metals – Mount Polley Mine have voted overwhelming to allow their bargaining committee to call for strike action if necessary, as the union works to secure a new collective agreement.
The strike voted was conducted from April 9 to 10, and the results were 96.3% of members voting in favor.
Council approves Rural Fringe Fire Protection Agreement offer to CRD

At its meeting April 9, Williams Lake City Council offered an agreement to Cariboo Regional District (CRD) for the provision of rural fringe fire protection services for a five-year term, beginning Jan.1, 2014.
The offered agreement covers the original rural fringe fire protection area, and uses a net residential assessment formula for operating and capital costs. In addition, the CRD would pay an annual $31,500 payment towards debt servicing costs for the new fire hall, which represents a reduction in the percentage of those costs the CRD pays from approximately 34% to 7%. This would result in a total payment of approximately $534,000 per year, based on assessments.
Independent Investigators deployed to Quesnel
The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) confirms that it has asserted jurisdiction and is investigating an incident on February 28,2013, involving the Quesnel RCMP.
Due to the sensitive nature of the investigation, no further information will be released at the present time.
The IIO and the Quesnel RCMP will work within the terms agreed upon in the Memorandum of Understanding that was signed by the Chief Civilian Director and B.C.'s police services in July 2012. As set by the Chief Civilian Director, the IIO's goals are to conduct fair, unbiased, timely, thorough and competent investigations and ensure transparency through public reporting.
RCMP rescue hiker near Blue Lake
At 2:00pm on Sunday, April 7, Williams Lake RCMP responded to report of a person lost in the bush near the Blue Lake Campground, approximately 30km north of Williams Lake.
The woman had called from her cell phone, stating that she had parked her vehicle on the road and had hiked in to the bush, but was not able to find her way back to the vehicle.
Arson suspected in minvan fire on Country Club Boulevard

The Williams Lake Fire Department called RCMP to attend a vehicle arson that had taken place at a residence on Country Club Boulevard at approximately 9:00pm on Saturday, April 6.
A 1998 Ford Windstar, was parked outside of the residence when it is believed that it was lit on fire by an unknown person(s). The fire is suspicious because the vehicle had not been driven for a period of time, and the drivers door had been opened.
Prince George RCMP arrest a male for impersonating a police officer
Prince George RCMP have located and arrested a man believed responsible for recent incidents of Impersonating a Police Officer.
On April 4th, 2013, Prince George RCMP issued a warning to the public of a man posing as a police officer and driving a small black 'sporty' vehicle with red and blue flashing lights.
Open burning to be prohibited across the Cariboo Fire Centre
Effective at noon on Monday, April 15, open burning will be prohibited across the entire Cariboo Fire Centre to help prevent person-caused wildfires and to protect the public.
Since March 31, Cariboo Fire Centre crews have responded to six wildfire incidents. All of these fires were caused by people and were therefore preventable.
Anyone conducting Category 2 or 3 fires must extinguish any such fires by noon on April 15. This prohibition will remain in place until September 30, 2013 or until the public is informed otherwise.
