Last night near midnight, the Williams Lake RCMP responded to a rash of break-ins to and theft from vehicles in and around the Cariboo Memorial Hospital and the Coast Fraser Inn.
During the investigation, police observed two males dressed in dark clothing matching the description provided by a witness. After a brief foot chase, police arrested two males, 18 and 16 years old.
Both males were known to police and both were breaching court imposed conditions.
The RCMP are encouraging anyone who may have been in the vicinity and saw anything suspicious or has knowledge of what happened to come forward and report it to the Williams Lake Detachment.

In 1989 at l'École Polytechnique de Montréal, 14 women were killed just because they were women.
An angry man with a gun roamed the corridors of the school and sought out and murdered 14 women. The 25 year old gunman ordered the women to move to one side of the room and the men to leave. He shouted to the women. "You're all a bunch of feminists, and I hate feminists." He then opened fire. Six of the women in the room were shot dead. The gunman continued his rampage throughout the building, killing a total of 14 women in a violent act of misogyny. He also injured 14 more people, mostly women, before using the gun to kill himself.
December 6th is the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence against Women in Canada. It was established in 1991 by the Parliament of Canada and marks the anniversary of the deaths of these women.
First Nations will receive assistance in protecting their communities from wildfire
BC municipalities, regional districts and First Nations will soon get more help to protect their communities and local infrastructure from wildfire threats, Forests, Lands and Natural Resource Operations Minister Steve Thomson announced today.

In April 2011, the ministry announced new funding of $25 million for the Strategic Wildfire Prevention Initiative. This initiative supports the development of community wildfire protection plans (CWPPs) and fuel management projects in interface areas where urban development borders on forested lands. The Union of B.C. Municipalities administers the funding, distributing grants to communities on behalf of the B.C. government.
Fuel management is the ongoing process of mitigating the risk of wildfire damage by reducing the amount of waste wood, tree needles, brush and other flammable material that could 'fuel' a grassland fire or forest fire.
Holiday season safety tips around the house
We will be presenting a series of articles from the RCMP on safety tips for the holiday season.
Around the house
- Remove snow and ice, and put sand or salt on walkways and driveways. Arrange to have this done even when you are away and for a neighbour to pick-up your mail.
- Discard packaging from big ticket items carefully, bundling cardboard boxes to conceal the nature of their contents.
- Keep a record of your valuables.
- Identify property by engraving an identifying mark.
Being safe doesn’t have to mean skimping on holiday cheer!

School meeting leaves students frustrated
By Sydney Goward, Columneetza Secondary School
Last week at school I received a permission form to attend the Student Voice meeting at 150 Mile Elementary. I was very excited to be given the chance to represent many of my peers at this meeting to discuss the Initial Options Report. I had attended a public consultation meeting at Williams Lake Secondary School (WLSS) in September and had talked to many people regarding the controversial topic before arriving at the meeting this past Monday.
16 year old girl struck in cross walk earlier today
At 10:30 this morning, the Williams Lake RCMP responded to 3rd Avenue North at Cameron Street in response to a pedestrian struck by a vehicle.
The investigation determined that while the pedestrian, a 16 year old female, was crossing the street on a marked crosswalk, an adult male driver who was starting from a stopped position at a stop sign on Cameron Street, turned onto 3rd Avenue and struck the female pedestrian in the crosswalk.
The female was transported to Cariboo Memorial Hospital where she is being examined for non-life threatening injuries, possibly a fractured arm. “The male driver has been charged under the Motor Vehicle Act for ‘Failing to Yield’,” said Inspector Warren Brown. “This is not a speed related incident.”
Three vehicle collision at Fairview Drive
On Saturday, December 1, at approximately 4:30pm, Williams Lake RCMP responded to a report of a three vehicle collision at Highway 20 and Fairview Drive.
A Dodge pickup was crossing Highway 20 from Hodgson Road to Fairview Drive when it was hit in the tailgate by a Ford pick-up that had been travelling westbound on Highway 20. This caused the Dodge to spin into a black SUV which had been stopped at the stop sign on Fairview Drive, waiting to enter Highway 20.
Williams Lake SPCA responds to Call Centre operation
By Bev Boyle
The Board of Directors of the BC SPCA has approved the establishment of a Provincial Call Centre in early 2013.
The BC SPCA Provincial Call Centre will be physically located on Vancouver Island but will respond to telephone calls from across the Province. The centre will be staffed seven days a week with hours of operation that will parallel the hours of operation at the majority of SPCA shelters.
Liz Dighton, Manager of the Williams Lake & District SPCA says, “This is a great idea, but will have many learning curves when dealing with remote and rural complaints.” She says they will hope for the best but is worried that the maps will not show exactly where the help is needed. As we all know, in many areas of the Cariboo, directions tend to be ‘cross four cattle guards and turn left at the red barn with the yellow pick-up.’
Man sustains serious injuries in Hanceville crash
On Wednesday, November 28 at approximately 11:30pm, the Alexis Creek RCMP received a report of a single vehicle accident on Taseko Lake Road at Yunesit'in Street on the Stone Reserve in Hanceville. Police attended and found four injured males.
The initial investigation revealed that a 1999 grey Chev Blazer had been travelling westbound on Taseko Lake Road when it lost control on a corner, went into the ditch and rolled over several times. Central Cariboo Search and Rescue attended and assisted BC Ambulance Service.
Officers in uniform work for speed control
Williams Lake RCMP officers performed a speed patrol today on 3rd Avenue, in one of the school zones for Marie Sharpe Elementary.
"They were here for about an hour. Of course, with the marked cars the drivers slowed down, so there weren't that many pulled over," says Kim Herdman, who has been a strong proponent in drawing attention to this problem area. "As soon as the RCMP left, the speed increased." Kim credits Williams Lake City Councillor Surinderpal Rather with getting the ball of action rolling.
