The WLSS (Williams Lake Secondary School) Girls Soccer Team is headed for Hawaii, thanks to fundraising efforts and to the generosity of the local business community. They will participate in the 13th annual Canada/Hawaii Friendship Cup tournament in March.

(Grade 9 lei-wearing soccer players Kara Zurak, forward, and Taylor Patton, midfield, greeted guests last night at Williams Lake Secondary School for an auction-and-refreshment fundraiser.)

(George Fosbery came from Kelowna to donate his skills as auctioneer for the fundraiser---in support of his granddaughter Sam Delacherois, who is going on the trip.)

The team is only one month old, according to Coach Catherine Getz, who has been coaching soccer for five years. She said that the Grades 9-12 WLSS girls team was put together in January---a short-notice challenge for fundraising and organization.

“We started fundraising in October—this team hasn’t even played outside yet,” she said. “This community’s commitment to giving back is huge, and the number of generous sponsors is overwhelming.”

Williams Lake Trucking Association recently made a generous donation to every player on the team—putting the team very close to its fundraising goal for this trip and helping to ensure that the young athletes have the opportunity to experience this unique sporting event.

Coach Getz said that most of the girls on the team have never been to Hawaii and that excitement is high, adding that at the Canada/Hawaii Friendship Cup there will be four Hawaiian teams and four teams from BC.
