091411_hockey_kidsThe BC government has just announced that it is investing a further $400,000 in KidSport BC in 2011/2012 to help more young people participate in community-based sports.  More than 1,500 children and youth will benefit from this funding through KidSport BC.

(Hockey is one of the sports that local kids have been able to play thanks to the support of KidSport.)

The non-profit organization provides financial assistance to British Columbia youth who face financial barriers that prevent them from participating in community-based sport programs. Grants averaging $200 help cover the cost of registration fees for one season of sport.

Deb Radolla, Manager for Active Living for the City of Williams Lake, was one of the original people who brought KidSport to Williams Lake. “I am totally delighted with this news,” she said. “The number of KidSport applications is steady in Williams Lake—this month alone we have already approved $1,410 in funding for sports in the community including archery, swim lessons and Minor Hockey.”

Recreation Coordinator Denise Skarra said that grant requests increase every year, making it more difficult to fund all the needs in the community. “This new funding will enable us to help more children,” she said, “so that no child has to sit out from local sports.”
