Curt Morben campaigns a new mud racer this season
| Sports |
Local racer Curt Morben is once again running a blown alcohol powered mud racer in the North West Mud Racing Association series. Curt has a new car he is campaigning this year after selling Boondoggle to a racer from Lac La Hache. Curt's 1968 SS El Camino "Ricochet" is now being run by a new racer to the sport, Scott Clay.
Scott built a new motor for the truck and runs in class E as Ricochet and he has been behind the wheel in two races now. "He placed 3rd at Billy Barker days and took 2nd in Valemount last weekend after I gave the car a bit of a tune up" said Morben. "I will tune his motor up a bit more for the upcoming race at Heritage park in Chilliwack in 2 weeks, I had to break him in bit by bit as he is a first time racer. We are expecting good race times from Scott as the motor he built is not for the faint of heart."
This season, Curt has teamed up with a long time friend from Merritt named Jack Maunu. Curt bought a new engine and put it in Jack's car. "Jack is an engine guru and we always tease him that he has the ability to talk to the motor. The engine is a 555 cubic inch Merlin and we run a 1471 Littlefield blower on it, we have the capability of producing approx 1800 horse power with a good tune up" Curt said. So far this season, they have raced at a $10,000 shoot-out and in 3 days of racing they were 4th overall . The fastest cars in B.C and Alberta were there and Curt was "ecstatic with our results". Jack felt that the car could do much better so they did some work to the heads and he proved his point in a big way in 100 Mile House.
In 100 Mile at the NWMRA race they placed first and got the fastest pass in their division. At Billy Barker days the car was blessed with an electrical problem that caused a little pop that lifted the blower off the motor, they didn't place but did get the fastest pass again. Valemount was another great race, as they took first and fastest again. According to the NWMRA website, after Valemount "The Boss" jumped forward and is now in the lead for the B.C points standings.
"Our next race coming up is in Chilliwack August 14 and 15 at the Chilliwack Heritage Park. We have our fingers crossed for good results again but the competition is fierce and the times we run do not allow for any mistakes. Combined times in our class saw a difference of just over 3 tenths of a second between 1st and 2nd" said Curt.
The name of the new car is "The BOSS" and is sponsored very generously by Michael Bos from the Cariboo Chiropractic Center. Their sponsorship makes it possible to do some of the big repairs that are necessary in running a car like this and Curt wants to thank Michael for his support.
