Council continued its public budget process Tuesday evening, discussing general directions for revenue and expenditures in the five-year Financial Plan and the 2012 legislative (Council) budget.

At the meeting, Council:

  • Directed staff to provide a comprehensive review of fees and charges, including a comparison to similar-sized communities;
  • Recommended a review of the Development Cost Charges Bylaw and fee structure in 2012;
  • Recommended a review of water and sewer utility rates (decisions would not impact the 2012 budget)
  • Recommended maintain a minimum of $400,000 in the General Surplus Reserve;
  • Recommended that Council waive its policy, and not have Council indemnities increase according the Consumer Price Index in 2012;
  • Recommended the creation of a debt policy;
  • Recommended keeping current service levels unchanged;

The next budget meeting will be held in City Council Chambers at 7:00pm on February 14 to continue discussion of the operating and capital budgets.

Under the Community Charter, the City’s financial plan and property tax rates must be adopted by May 15th of each year.
