No building permits required in the CRD
| Letters - Letter to the Editor |
In a precedent-setting unanimous decision vote in a meeting in June 2009, the Cariboo Regional District Board of Directors voted in favour of a variance for an illegally constructed building in Flett subdivision.
This building was oversized for the lot, built without a building permit, and when the Regional District issued a stop-work order, the building was continued to completion.
The owner then applied for a variance and was granted such by the Cariboo Regional Directors. There was a restriction that the building would now require an engineering certificate; however, there was no stated deadline for this certificate.
The Cariboo Regional District policy has a maximum fine of $500 for this offence if they decide to impose it.
Any new construction in the Cariboo Regional District should now be legally entitled to the same guidelines. This should avoid extra costs, thanks to time lost from writing for expensive permits, and hold-ups due to building inspections. Your building requirements can be achieved under your engineering certificate, which has no deadline, so is unnecessary anyway.
Happy building!
