Letters - Letter to the Editor

letter_editorEditor:

We operate a certified organic (PACS) and Demeter Canada Certified biodynamic ranch in the Chilcotin including extensive rangeland, leased from the ‘Crown’, which has been grazed by our cattle for over thirty years. When we received notice from West Fraser Mills in Quesnel that they were going to spray Glyphosate, or Roundup, I knew I needed to take action.

I responded to a letter from West Fraser Mills, in which they described their ‘Pest Management Plan.’ This ‘plan’ indicated that they planned to apply Glyphosate by aerial and ground-based application between the years of 2012 and 2017. The area they plan to spray affects the north, or ‘wet’ end of our ranch.

Having our cattle, horses, dogs and people exposed to land which has been mistreated with the proposed chemicals, is under no circumstances acceptable. More to the point, though, glyphosates are herbicides of the worst kind.

Lodgepole pine on the Fraser plateau has been growing and regenerating successfully for millennia without herbicides. It is disastrous, already, what is happening to mother earth, on land granted by the Crown to legal or real persons, by the appliction of chemicals.

But when thriving companies cater to the greed of demons like Monsanto and poison publicly owned lands and all that lives on and in it, I and my fellow Canada residents have the duty to stop them.

Did you know that companies like West Fraser have been spraying our BC lands with glyphosates to the tune of 16,000 hectares every year, for years and plan to continue?

Let us look at glyphosates, what they do and what Emeritus Professor DonHuber, PhD, of Perdue University, IN, the world renown authority on glyphosates, has to say:

“Glyphosate was developed by Monsanto for GMO crops. We know it as Round-up. Glyphosates tie up certain minerals in the soil and thus make these nutrients unavailable to the plant. The plant's immune system is weakened, and soil-born fungi enter the plant and weaken or kill it within days.”

Some chemical company applied to the French courts for biodegradable labeling of Glyphosate. The Supreme Court of France denied, as nobody knows how long glyphosates stay in the ground.

“A follow-up thought is that your cattle will be ingesting the Glyphosate directly from the grass since it is systemic in the plants and 80 % stays in the plant as long as it is alive at levels well above documented toxicity levels,” Dr. Huber said in a letter. “The rest may be in the soil for many years since it is a difficult compound to degrade - easy to detoxify for plants by combination with cations, but difficult to degrade so still toxic to animals.

“The proposal to use Glyphosate by aerial application is not only damaging to their own 'crop' (trees) through direct damage and increased disease susceptibility, but also severely toxic to wildlife, animals and humans that will be exposed through the feed and drift to air and water.

“Glyphosate is a strong endocrine hormone disrupter that causes reproductive failure and birth defects in deer, elk, etc AND humans!  It should never be applied by air because it is also windborne (US Geological Survey reports).

“It is a much more serious problem than most people are aware of! Most commodity food is unsafe to eat mostly because of its high contents of herbicides, pesticides, synthetic hormones, heavy metals and last, but not at all least, because of genetic modification and its dependence on glyphosates."

Why do you think we have more and more children with cancer? Why do you think children have so-called ADD, ADHD, ADS, allergies to you-name-it? Why do you think older people are getting so-called Alzheimer's and diabetes?

Very much like the plants that forest companies plan on killing, they plan to ruin it for:

- the rancher who wants to raise healthy stock

- the hunter who wants to bring home clean meat

- the fisherman who wants good fish

- the hiker who wants to enjoy the great outdoors- the world tourist who comes here to our Supernatural British Columbia

- the coyote eating the mouse

- the mouse eating the seeds

- etc etc etc etc etc etc etc

Did you know that human communities exposed to glyphosates have infertility rates of 80% to 90% and that 10% of the babies who are born are deformed? Is it ignorance, greed or is it criminal negligence that makes forest companies apply to the BC Ministry of Environment to poison our land?

Sincerely,

Felix Schellenberg
