HST Petition delay
| Letters - Letter to the Editor |
Editor,
The recent decision by Elections BC to delay forwarding the results of the recent anti-HST initiative to the BC legislature is unacceptable.
The initiative is a democratic right in this province and this latest decision is an affront to all British Columbians. While it may be a business coalition that is taking the issue to court, it’s clear that the Liberal government has some responsibility for stonewalling the process.
The same businesses that filed the court case also contributed $318 500 to the Liberals’ election campaign coffers since 2001. They are the ones to directly benefit from the HST and are therefore willing to go to the expense of tying the matter up in the courts. Cariboo-Chilcotin MLA Donna Barnett has stated that she would represent her constituents in Victoria.
Over 9 000 of her constituents spoke clearly when they signed the anti-HST petition. If she is true to her campaign promise she will support sending the successful anti-HST petition to the legislature immediately. The legislature is not required to await the outcome of the court decision to receive and act on the petition results. When will MLA Barnett stand up for her constituents?
