Letters - Letter to the Editor

What 40 percent cuts to the arts looks like
Dear Mr. Krueger, Mr. Herbert, Mr. Campbell, Mr. Hansen, Mr. Simpson, and the Williams Lake media,

As a visual artist who is currently repaying a massive student loan for a Diploma and a Degree in Fine Arts, as an under-paid Exhibition Coordinator of a non-profit Gallery and Studio Society, as a member of a community arts society, and as an avid advocate of the arts and its importance to community, life, and well-being, I am strongly opposed to the insensitive and unexplainable cuts that are being imposed upon the arts and culture community. It just doesn't make sense...

Julie Fowler has the right idea: Advocate for 1% for the arts! Give arts groups 1% of the PST collected on arts and culture in British Columbia. Then only those who go to concerts, movies, museums, art galleries, art auctions, festivals and so on would be paying for the grants that go towards the arts. I would gander the amount of money the provincial government gives in the form of grants to the arts is only a drop in the bucket compared to what arts and culture brings into the government through taxes...

Advocating for change,

Leah Selk
Visual Artist
Gallery Exhibition Coordinator, The Station House Gallery
Member of the Cariboo Arts Society
Williams Lake, BC
