April 28 is Canada’s National Day of Mourning
| Letters - Letter to the Editor |
April 28 is Canada’s National Day of Mourning to honour workers who have been killed or seriously injured on the job. Last year in BC, 121 workers lost their lives at work, one of them right here in Williams Lake.
Ceremonies of remembrance are planned around the province, sponsored jointly by WorkSafe BC, the Business Council of BC, and the BC Federation of Labour, and will also be held across the country. Our own ceremony in Williams Lake will be held at the Cenotaph at City Hall, Wednesday, April 28 at 11 am. The ceremony is organized by the South Cariboo Labour Council and the local United Steelworkers, and I am privileged to be invited to help with some of the organization and publicity. Williams Lake Mayor Kerry Cook and other dignitaries will speak, and wreaths will be laid in memory of fallen workers.
Please publicize this event and the poster in the link below in order that we may achieve a broad awareness of this solemn occasion in our community. I encourage everyone to attend, or if this is not possible, take a moment at 11 am to remember our fallen citizens. If we use this day as a turning point to create a greater culture of safety in all our workplaces, their sacrifices will not have been in vain.
