Less than a week ago, I was watching an infomercial by Kevin Trudeau marketing his book 'Natural Cures'. He was captivating and drew me right in to the conspiratorial perspective of 'them' (the drug companies) vs. 'us' (the hapless and controlled sick folk). The infomercial almost got me in its grip, until I took it upon myself to get a clearer picture of Kevin Trudeau's past. What emerged was a picture of someone who was preying upon people's fears. Oh, there were many things said I totally agreed with. I have experienced many alternative health practices in my lifetime. His was yet another bandwagon to jump upon. After hundreds of bandwagons roll by and flash their stuff, you do think twice. Ultimately, it boils down to one thing- not believing automatically what people say to you, but trusting your own instincts and experiences. The other trick is to step back and not get drawn into the dramas of either side. Taking sides is polarizing. Truth usually does not reside in either place.

The drug companies do not want you to step back and access your relationship to  affirmations that only they can cure disease. Admittedly, it is far easier to pop a pill than allow nature to take its course. Natural cures, be it herbal or homeopathic – anything that is not a drug, is not patentable. If natural remedies were patentable, you can be certain that the drug companies would jump on that bandwagon very quickly. Usually, you only need take the natural remedy until you are cured! The drug companies affirm that you must take their drugs for LIFE. Oh, the smell of money!

Do drugs actually cure disease? The answer to that question is interesting. I would ask you one question. Has any drug you have ever taken cured any of your diseases? Here is the double-speak that my brain has difficulty computing:

'If the drugs are the only thing that the drug companies and doctors allow for the so-called curing of disease, but they do not actually 'cure' disease, then what in the blazes are the drugs being used for?' A child's logic would ask the same question. Then there is the other double-speak that my child's logic wonders about:

'If the drugs actually cure a disease, then why do people have to take them after they are cured?'. I know, you could go crazy trying to sort that one out. Then there are the hosts of syndromes and diseases that have arisen out of this ongoing saga: Restless Leg syndrome, Attention Deficit disorder, Aspergers syndrome, Autism, and even Acid Reflux. Menopause not too long ago was treated as a disease, with the lifelong popping of synthetic estrogen, at least until they realized it was killing women with increased cancers. Where did the medical mandate of 'do no harm to patients go'? Is there really a medical profession any more?

Of course, with every new disease that is added to the long list of humanity's woes, there is a chemist in the wings just waiting to invent a chemical that you will be able to take for the rest of your life. Don't you just love games? Somehow this one is reminiscent of a rather dangerous one. If memory serves me, it is called Russian Roulette. I believe this is one Michael Jackson, Heath Ledger and perhaps even Marilyn Monroe were very familiar with.

It is time that our beleaguered communities, and yes, that includes Williams Lake, took back control of our lives to paths that lead us to vibrant health. It is an exciting time where so many efforts to address real issues of survival of not only humanity but the very planet itself are arising. The interconnectedness of all of these systems is obvious. But it has to start at the grass roots level. The last I looked, my piggy bank was broken and empty and I was down to my last band aid. I for one am ready to take that all important first step towards creating a brave new world of community health and prosperity for all.
