Making sure that their customers are safe from slips during ice and snow is an important issue for local businesses. Ice and snow on the sidewalks and entrances, as well as slippery floor surfaces due to tracked-in snow are some of the things that can cause injury to shoppers.
Johnston and Meier Insurance Agent Peggy Maas said that slips and falls happen every year, and are a common topic of lawsuits. “It’s very important that businesses have a good commercial liability policy and coverage in place,” she said. “When someone slips on the ice, it’s an accident, but businesses need to make sure they’re covered.”

“We try to keep our sidewalks clean and have two mats for people,” said Carl Johnson from Dollar Dollar Downtown. “If it gets bad we put signs up to warn people that the floor is slippery,” he said. “We don’t want anyone to get hurt.”
At Lake City Ford, customer safety is a priority, according to Heather Brown, Administration. “We shovel and de-ice and make sure our lot and entrance is accessible and safe,” she said. “We have huge mats, and if needed, we grab a mop—it’s important to us to make our customers feel welcome and comfortable.”
