Generous donations help seven year old cancer patient's family

Most parents can't think of anything more frightening than being told their child has cancer, and Candace McNamara was no exception.
Candace's seven year old Hannah has been diagnosed with a Stage IV Wilms Tumor, a cancer of the kidneys that typically occurs in children, though rarely in adults. "Hannah has had her left kidney removed, but unfortunately, it has spread to her lungs," said Karen Browne, owner of Karen's Place Restaurant in downtown Williams Lake.

When Karen learned her long time friend was embarking on this battle to save her daughter's life, she began raising funds to help the McNamara family with the burden of the travel costs. "Every three months Hannah and her mom must travel to Vancouver to the Children's Hospital for scans and testing as continuing follow-up to the surgery and the 66 chemotherapy treatments Hannah has undergone," Karen explained.
The fundraising efforts put in to place in July came to fruition on August 31, when Karen proudly presented Candace with $1,243.00 of generous donations from her customers. Candace expressed her appreciation for all those that donated to help her family deal with these costs and said the funds will certainly help with the continual trips she and Hannah must make to Vancouver.

Karen Browne said she will continue to collect funds via the donation-box on the counter at Karen's Place Restaurant located at 112A North 2nd Avenue.
