Dean Boyd is the news reporter and production assistant at the brand new Sugarcane FM radio, ‘Free-Spirited Listening’ at 100.7. On a steep learning curve with his new job, he said that he’s excited about the opportunities, the skills and the adventures coming his way.

I love radio personalities and enjoy visiting with people. I’m looking forward to the opportunities that this job will bring me, and to the skills that I will learn.

Dean was born and raised in Williams Lake, stating that he lived in Soda Creek for a while as a child, and also in Vancouver.

He explained that he’s really looking forward to doing is concert listings and contests, promoting give-aways and prizes. “One of the most exciting things we want to do, though, is generate interest in our culture and our language,” he said.

“We’re losing our language. My generation lost our language because our parents had it beat out of them in residential schools. To them, it was a stigma. Our parents didn’t love our language anymore,” he continued.

“We’re very interested in broadcasting in our own language. We want people to enjoy the music and be proud of our own station. We want to provide First Nations material that matters to us all.”

He said that when he listens to the radio he likes a continuous, upbeat theme. “Music should make you sing along and tap your toes, and it should relate to your life,” he said. “You can change someone’s attitude with a song.”
