Going for a walk with friends will take on an all new meaning tomorrow at the Williams Lake Walk for ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) in Boitanio Park. The event is a fundraiser for an incurable disease that has impacted families in Williams Lake and surrounding communities.

(Cindy Nadeau from Perfect Match is one of the musicians who will be on stage tomorrow.)

The Williams Lake Walk for ALS registration is at 10:00am tomorrow near the main stage in Boitanio Park, with the walk beginning at 11:00. There will be live music by Perfect Match, Sharon Woods and friends and the Williams Lake Pipe Band, as well as hot dogs and hamburgers after the walk.

Organizer Eileen Campbell said that her husband died of ALS in 2010 after a two-year battle. “I want to raise awareness about this disease. When I went through this, there was no local connection at all--they sent us to Vancouver to attend GF Strong, where the provincial ALS care site is located,” she said. “Through organizing this I have also realized how many people ALS has affected in our community.

“There is no cure for ALS. All that can sometimes be done is to slow the progress. There is also no definite diagnosis for it. There is only symptomatic diagnosis after ruling everything else out,” she explained.

“I want people to know that this is an extremely debilitating disease, and that it’s important to raise funds to support scientists to continue research. They suspect that they can find a cure in the next 10 years--an end is in sight.

“ALS is crippling to families and communities,” she said. “This Williams Lake walk is a chance for people to feel that they contributed to help find a cure.”

There are pledge forms available at Barton Insurance on 2nd Avenue, across from Shoppers Drug Mart, and you can pick one up in the park tomorrow at the registration table.
