Aggressive coyote on River Valley Trail

Local resident Barbara Green states that a coyote she has spotted many times on the section of the River Valley Trail beside Tolko’s empty log yard, has become quite aggressive.
She explained that yesterday at approximately 6:00pm she was on the area of the trail that goes past the new ponds, crosses the creek on a log bridge and goes up the hill to the other side. “Between my friend and me, we had two large dogs and two small dogs,” she stated.
“My friend said that she’d heard recently that a coyote had attacked a small dog on this end of the trail.”
Barbara walks the River Valley Trail year round with her two large dogs, and said that she has frequently seen a lone coyote by the log yard. “On occasion it has barked at me but always from a distance—I just didn’t take it seriously,” she explained.
“Yesterday, though, it came up to within 20-30 feet of us and kept barking like crazy.”
The two women thought the coyote might have cubs in the area. They yelled at it and it ran off. “We went down to the main road below and headed back to the parking lot,” Barbara continued.
“The coyote had come down a steep side trail, though, and intercepted us as we approached the bridge below the train station.
“We yelled at it some more, but it continued to follow us at a distance on the side hill until we were well around a corner and heading towards the ponds,” she said. “We had one older small dog who we thought it might be after and we picked that one up – we also started running when it kept following us.”
She stated that the experience was alarming, and that she reported it to the Conservation call-in line. "I just think other hikers and dog walkers should know about this," she said.
