The innovative intergenerational project between Grade 6/7 students and residents at the Seniors Village became a ‘barrel of fun’ recently at a fundraiser dinner and auction that featured five recycled and refurbished oil barrels.

Keynote speaker for the event was Sharon Mackenzie, founder of the i2i Intergenerational Society, and Terry Fowler’s quick-witted and rapid-fire auctioneering skills delighted the crowd. Jake Hooge played mandolin for the event, attended by students and some of their senior ‘buddies’ from the Village, teachers, various guests, Seniors Village Activities staff and members of the business community.
Grade 6/7 students Danielle Schultz, Jaylyn Johnson and Cam Systma performed their Speech Arts pieces from the Cariboo Festival of the Arts and there was a movie production of the intergeneration project by several of the students.

The barrels were donated by Petro Can, cleaned by Blacky’s Car Wash and painted with recycling logos with left-over recycled paint by the students, and sold for $100 to $150 each.
The money raised from the dinner and auction and donated from the BC Retired Teachers Association will go toward a bursary program for the students who participated with the intergenerational program.
