Heartfelt donation saves dog at Williams Lake SPCA

A generous donation from a long-time supporter of the SPCA has forever changed the life of a white husky dog at the Williams Lake shelter.
It was down to one working day before a decision had to be made about the future of the badly-injured dog.
The four-year-old dog was brought to the local shelter from Nemiah Valley by a kind-hearted person who drove four hours in extreme weather. ‘Stewy’, as the shelter called him, was shot in his left hind leg about a year ago by someone who objected to his barking too loudly and too long one night. Since then he has been hopping on three legs.
The results of his vet examinations were alarming: his paw pads are nearly gone, all his toes are coming off, bone is exposed and the paw is severely infected. He has lesions and sores on the rest of his body, but it was reported that even while vet staff were scrubbing and cleaning his wounds, he was giving them ‘kisses’ and wagging his tail.
Until a few days ago his future was extremely uncertain. In order to save his live, the injured leg would have to be amputated—a procedure that would cost more than the shelter’s medical budget for the entire month.
It was pure good fortune that changed the young dog’s future. A friend of the SPCA dropped by the shelter to ask what they needed most. When she heard about Stewy and some of the other animals in need or urgent care, she returned with a generous cheque and a large amount of clean towels and blankets.
Stewy’s surgery was booked on the spot—he is on pain medications and antibiotics and is scheduled for the vet’s table this coming Tuesday. Once he recovers, the shelter will look for a good home for the extraordinary animal.
