Everyone should read the Canadian Consumer Handbook

Information is power, especially when it comes to being a well informed consumer. The more informed we become, the better able we are to make wise and careful decisions about the things we need in our everyday lives.
Take advance fee scams for example – be cautious about advertisements promising guaranteed jobs, guaranteed loans, credit repair, debt consolidation or similar claims. In many cases, you will be asked to send money to a company in advance but will receive little or nothing in return. Say “No thank you” to anyone who says they can repair your credit history.
Did you know it is recommended to get a report on your credit history once a year? Errors in your report could indicate fraud. Always contact the credit bureau immediately to fix errors.
These are just some of the topics covered in the Canadian Consumer Handbook, a handy online source of helpful information on everything from managing your debt to dealing with telemarketers. It even helps you with how to make an effective complaint. The Handbook has been produced jointly by Canada's federal, provincial and territorial governments making it applicable to all Canadians.
