The shelter, which had been opened only for dog adoptions in recent weeks while treating cases of ringworm in cats, is now open regular hours for all adoptions.

“This is a training exercise, not an evaluation or demonstration,” Chief Paul McCarthy recently explained to a group of more than 25 emergency responders from the 150 Mile House Volunteer Fire Department, Miocene Volunteer Fire Department and Central Cariboo Search and Rescue highway rescue team.
It is relatively rare to get that many emergency service individuals in one spot for a practise. One member called it the ‘organized ballet’, saying a multi-agency practise allows everyone to do their job faster and more efficiently because they’ve worked with each other before and know what the other agency is there to do. He explained that knowing what the other emergency responders capabilities are, makes everyone’s task easier and, ultimately, benefits the victims.
While all responders were off-site, Incident Commanders from each emergency group staged the scene; a three-vehicle crash involving two mid-sized cars and a motorbike, complete with five live victims sporting realistic wounds that would be indicative of the actual scenario. Door handles on the cars were smashed so the doors couldn’t be opened quickly or simply – a very real scenario faced by emergency responders. The group of responders then arrived at the scene and began to treat it as if it was an actual motor vehicle incident.
Angel wings on my window

Pat Lingholt and her mother, Chris McIsaac, woke one morning in September to find a very distinct set of wings imprinted on their living room window.
“Neither of us heard or saw it happen, and there were no signs of an injured bird outside,” said Pat.

Connect Parent Group workshops offer different approach
Do you wonder and worry about your child’s behaviour? Are you concerned about your relationship with your child? Do you feel like you just don’t know what to do? Past methods have focused on controlling the behaviour. Many parents and caregivers have struggled with this as it does not produce the results they hoped for.The Connect Parent Group is a series of workshops in Williams Lake that takes a different approach than most other parenting groups. Rather than focusing on behavioural management techniques, the Connect Parent Group focuses on enhancing the building blocks of attachment, improving the parents’ ability to reflect before acting, and adjust their feelings so they respond more constructively to conflict. The series of ten free one hour sessions is delivered over 10 weeks.

They will be provided with an information package which includes an application form.

Local video project could benefit Williams Lake SPCA

By Bev Boyle
Shelby Bryam and her Big Sister Linda have entered a contest through Big Brothers Big Sisters and are finalists in the video-voting challenge to win a $2500 grant from Canadian Western Bank. The contestants were asked to make a video stating what they would do with the grant and Shelby and Linda, with their love of animals, decided if they won the money it would go to the local chapter of the SPCA. On the video, Linda explains that the shelter needs a new storage shed for kitty litter and concrete for the fence line for the “escape-artists" dogs.
