Each year, fires during the holiday season injure British Columbians and cause thousands of dollars in property damage. Since many of these fires are preventable, the Office of the Fire Commissioner and the Ministry of Justice are offering some basic fire safety tips, so British Columbians can enjoy a fire-safe holiday season.

Motorists heading out for the holiday season can get all the information they need for a safe and informed trip by visiting driveBC.ca.
Current highway conditions, travel advisories and closures are updated continuously on the DriveBC website.
Motorists should also install good winter-tread tires. Eighty sections of mountainous highway experience challenging winter conditions. "Just because you have winter tires on your vehicle, doesn't mean you have to or should travel at the posted speed," says Brielle Penner, media relations for Central Cariboo Search and Rescue. "Drive at the speed you are most comfortable at -- drive safe. Think ahead, leave room for stopping or maneuvering before the vehicle begins to respond to potential conditions."

Constable Micheal Berns recipient of Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal
Constable Micheal Berns recently received the Queen Diamond Jubilee Medal at an RCMP awards ceremony in Prince George November 7. Constable Berns was one of only a few Williams Lake residents to have received this honor.
A new commemorative medal was created to mark the 2012 celebrations of the 60th anniversary of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s accession to the Throne as Queen of Canada. The Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal is a tangible way for Canada to honor Her Majesty for her service to this country. At the same time, it serves to honor significant contributions and achievements by Canadians. During the year of celebrations, 60 000 deserving Canadians will be recognized.
