090712_fringe_fire_meetThe Cariboo Regional District is hosting a public meeting to inform residents of the current situation concerning fire protection in the Williams Lake Fringe area.  The Regional District is seeking input as negotiations between the City of Williams Lake (the City) and the Cariboo Regional District (CRD) move forward.

“Through a back-door deal with the Provincial Government, the City instituted an increase in rates for people in fringe protection areas which is a great deal higher than city costs,” explained alternate Director Bill Carruthers.

“Since there was no referendum, the CRD needs to get a clear feel for what residents want.”

“Are you prepared to accept the higher costs from the City? Are you prepared to go without fire protection? Are you prepared to organize a volunteer fire department? Are you prepared to pay the higher rates until such time as you can organize a new volunteer fire department in your area?”

“CRD Directors will be present to explain the options to residents, and answer any questions,” Mr. Carruthers concluded.

The decisions made could affect all residents within the Williams Lake Fringe Fire Protection areas of Electoral Areas D, E and F.

If you live outside Williams Lake proper but your fire protection is currently provided by the Williams Lake Fire Department, it is in your best interest to attend this meeting on Wednesday, September 12, at 7:00pm at the Gibraltar Room at Cariboo Memorial Complex.
