River raft trip commemorates communities
| Events |
A landmark event took place this morning at Sheep Creek Bridge just west of Williams Lake, when a river raft expedition departed for a four-day trip to Lillooet.
Dog Creek/Canoe Creek communities members, leaders and friends are making the journey to remember and honour First Nations families and communities who were lost during the BC smallpox epidemic.

It has been 150 years since smallpox swept through First Nations communities along the Fraser River. The rafting group will stop in seven of the 13 extinct Dog Creek/Canoe Creek villages, erecting commemorative monuments and conducting cultural ceremonies.
The villages were small, and there is evidence that family groups died of the disease in their pit houses.
The event has been in the planning stages for some time, and follows closely on the recent return of the Canoe Creek petroglyph rock from the Vancouver Museum to the mouth of Churn Creek.
