“I wasn’t really surprised when she signed up for this,” said Kaylee Billyboy, Terris’ younger sister. “I was surprised when she ran for BC High School Rodeo and won Miss Congeniality.

“I see such a change in her now when it comes to public speaking---she has come so far and become so confident. Our whole family is so proud of her.”

Stampede Queen contestants Christina Walsh, Miss Overlander Ramada Inn and Michelle Ball, Miss Gustafson's Dodge, were presented with awards and congratulated warmly on their improvements and successes.

Leading up to the 2012 Princess and Queen announcements, the Miss Congeniality Award, decided by votes from the contestants themselves, was presented to Terris Billyboy.

The Horsemanship Awards are based on the contestants' knowledge of general information about horses, riding skills and the Grand Entry. The theory exam award went to Alexis Forseille, the practical riding award went to Terris Billyboy, the most-improved horsemanship award went to Christina Walsh and the horsemanship trophy went to Terris Billyboy, as well as the overall horsemanship award.

The Public Speaking Award was awarded by the Toastmaster Club, with the most-improved award going to Christina Walsh, and the overall award going to Alexis Forseille.

The Written Exam category consists of local history and knowledge and rodeo knowledge. The runner up award went to Terris Billyboy and the overall award was presented to Alexis Forseille.

The Personal Interview is a panel of people from industry, past royalty, Community Policing and the City, and the contestants are judged on their appearance, as well as their ability to answer the panel's questions. The runner up award was given to Michelle Ball and the overall award was presented to Alexis Forseille.

In the Fashion Show category the girls are judged on attire, poise and appearance. The runner up award went to Alexis Forseille, and the overall award went to Terris Billyboy.

Jamie Tannis from the Stampede Queen Committee said that this was an astoundingly talented and dedicated group of young ladies and that the new Queen and Princess were less than a percentage point apart in the winning tally.

Besides speaking about the hard work of the committee, she talked about what they all appreciated about the 2011 royalty. She said that 2011 Stampede Queen Davana Mahon’s grace and poise were greatly admired and appreciated, and that Bobi's positive outlook and great sense of humour were also a highlight during the past year.

Each of the contestants took a section of time between the time they signed up until the coronation.

Christina talked about the process to become a contestant--submitting your school transcripts, going to interviews, finding a sponsor and completing the application.

They attended all functions, fundraising activities and learned the history of Williams Lake and the Stampede and polished their public speaking. They attended things like Stampeders hockey games, the Rick Hansen Anniversary Tour, and the Indoor Rodeo.

Alexis talked about adventures they had along the way. She said that they learned the anatomy of a horse as part of their activities, attended the City of Williams Lake anniversary tea and learned a lot about 'rodeo culture' from Roy Call from C+ Rodeos.

They also did the Nutrition Fun Run, and on Easter attended the Miocene/Horsefly petting zoo in Boitanio Mall, and they also participated in the Big Brothers Big Sisters Bowl for Kids Sake.

Michelle talked about presenting their final speeches for Toastmasters. She talked about the Big Recycling Day at Canadian Tire, the Bike Rodeo and the Lions Club Mother's Day breakfast--all of which the contestants enjoyed.

They modeled clothing at the Ladies Night Out event at the meeting, and attended the Likely parade.

They all said that it was an honour to work alongside the other three contestants.

Terris said that she's had the time of her life. She said that helped out at the 'Horsin' Around in the Cariboo' event and the Lions 400 Dinner. They had a horsemanship final exam that same weekend.

She said that they did a fundraiser gymkhana for the Stampede Queen Committee and the Mountain Race.

A power point presentation was shown, highlighting the past six months for the girls, and showing photos of them as young kids.

Bobi Bracewell made her farewell speech, saying that she had originally written a speech from the point of view of her cowboy boots, but changed her mind and decided to 'wing it.'

"'Farewell' is another word for ‘goodbye’, but I'm not saying goodbye--only to this crown on top of my head," she said. "This has been a great time for me--we met so many people who can have positive impact on our lives.

"This is such a great program: we've all really grown."

Before passing her crown to Alexis Forseille, 2011 Stampede Queen Davana Mahon talked about the experiences she and Princesses Bobi Bracewell and Alexia Colton had traveling together--creating bonds and meeting great people in BC and Alberta. She told the contestants that some of the best advice she got was to remember to keep some extra bobby pins on hand for windy days, and keep some hairspray nearby.

"But please remember that the most important thing isn't perfect hair and perfect clothes,” she said. “It's standing tall and being a role model and being the best person you can be."
