What we did this weekend
| Events |
There was lots to do in Williams Lake this weekend! Some of the things people enjoyed were a ‘project vehicle’ sale near Fox Mountain, attending graduation ceremonies and celebrations, a chance to hear live bagpipe tunes, eating fresh bannock burgers, finding home-grown artistry at the Oliver Street Market, venturing an opinion about the future of the swimming pool and cheering on local high school graduates in the highly entertaining Grad Parade.
If you have an opinion about the swimming pool in Williams Lake, there was no better time or place to raise your voice, and get updated options, than Friday and Saturday. A 'pool info' team, made up of people from the pro consulting firm hired to present options, the City and the CRD, was on the street talking to residents in locations throughout the city. They were photographed just before leaving Canadian Tire and heading to the Complex, where they were set up until 1:00pm and then at Walmart until 3:00pm. Build a new pool? Fix the old one? Add fitness facility options? Expand into the parking lot? Close the pool for a year during upgrades? Residents were encouraged to speak their piece where it makes a difference!
Lunch was ‘on’ at Walmart--a fundraiser for the Williams Lake family whose baby tragically passed away last week in Kelowna. Family members are raising money for the baby's loved ones to attend the funeral, which will be held in Hazelton. Lunch menu delicacies included bannock, bannock burgers, bannock dogs, smokies and snacks. You could follow your nose from the parking lot—they were on site until late afternoon.
People lined the road and filled the lot at the Fox Mountain Road turnoff, eyeing and buying from a huge array of vintage vehicles, 'project' cars, trucks, motorcycles and parts. Collectors and enthusiasts enjoyed the 'hit' of nostalgia, and families enjoyed hot dogs and refreshments--all for a 2$ admission donation to the Child Development Centre.
'Rainie' was in the air at the Oliver Street Market on Saturday, selling beautiful flower magnets. She was joined by other vendors selling fresh baked good, canned and preserved items, hand-crafted clothing and locally-produced vegetables, art work and meats. There were baby-sweet carrots, fresh white turnips, exquisitely carved yellow cedar birds, feather earrings, seasonings, used books and desserts.
Shoppers at Cariboo Growers Market can stand and inhale the fresh, exciting smells of garden spinach, rhubarb, apples, slender green onions, red peppers and herbs. Local farmers and producers bring armloads of new culinary delights every week to the Market.
The 'Highlands' around Save on Foods were alive with the sound of bagpipes to kick off a fundraising BBQ for 'Operation Smile.' The group is raising funds for cleft palate and cleft lip surgeries for children around the world. It was a great deal for a great cause--$2 for a hot dog and chips and donations were gratefully accepted!
