Scramble success for literacy

A total of 16 teams competed yesterday in the 4th annual Scramble for Literacy, raising close to $6,000 for Cariboo Chilcotin Partners for Literacy. Every dollar will go toward local programs such as the one-to-one adult tutoring program and the Red Bookshelf program for kids
The Scramble tallied team scores, and the winning team with the lowest score was made up of Justin Brink, Evan McDonald, Justin Doucette and Derrick.
Event organizer Linda McDonald, said that every participant got a prize, some of which were donated by generous sponsors.
“The main sponsor for the event was Heartland Toyota, who has supported Scramble for Literacy since the beginning,” she said. “Other major sponsors are Johnston Meier Insurance, Hills Health and Guest Ranch, the Cariboo Advisor and Tribune for advertising and printing, Investors Group and All Ways Travel.”
She added that various local organizations are very much appreciated for their donations as ‘hole sponsors.’
There were prizes for things like the longest putt and the longest drive for both men and women, Literacy Tshirts were won by both the winning team with the lowest score and the ‘Most Honest Golfers’ team with the highest score.
Instead of High Card Stud for a side game during the scramble, event organizers instigated a unique alternative: High Point Sponsor Scrabble. At all par-three holes, each player was given a Scrabble ‘tile’ with the appropriate value of the letter.
After the game, the teams were given a list of sponsors for the event. They traded, haggled and exchanged tiles with other teams in an effort to spell out the highest-scoring sponsor name on the list.
“We so appreciate the face that, even with the economy, the sponsors came through for this charity. We also had a wonderful meal at the Fox’s Den—the staff went out of their way for us,” she explained. “This certainly wouldn’t have happened without Randy Beatson and Jaye Chapell from Toyota: they not only sponsor us, they support us.”
