Taking elephant issues to city council

A group of ‘circus objectors’ gathered at the entrance to Jordan World Circus on Monday to continue public awareness about the treatment of elephants in circuses. This protest began in 2008 when Opal Norberg and Sheila Robichaud stood alone at the entrance of the Stampede Grounds with their signs.

The group grew to 12 people in 2009. “There are many people who are pulling together now and really showing support. We just want people to understand what they are supporting when they go to watch the performance,” Opal stated. “Most people are unaware of the behind-the-scenes in circuses and would not support them if they only knew the truth.”
Opal and Sheila have handed in a proposal to City Council to ban live animal circuses in Williams Lake, and are waiting to see if they go before Council through a formal council meeting or committee of the whole.

“I have all my research and all 21 BC bylaws pertaining to this matter ready to go, and have started a petition as well for those who are interested in signing: this is just to show our Council that there are many people who agree the new bylaw is needed,” she explained.
“This is where the real power is held---within our bylaws. Williams Lake needs to join the other 21 BC communities who have already passed similiar bylaws and don't allow animal circuses,” she continued. “There are many circuses that are based on human talent alone.”
