Don Manson, Coordinator of the Community Development Institute at UNBC, will be the 2010 Community Connections Speaker for UNBC this spring, and will be speaking to residents of Williams Lake on Thursday, May 27 at 7pm in Council Chambers.
Co-hosting this event is one example of hands-on support that the Credit Union offers the community, and Regional Manager Petar Jelinic said that he is looking forward to hearing what Mr. Manson has to say.
“As a community-based organization we have a vested interest in the success of our community, people in the community and our members,” he said. “The stronger, more informed and more educated our community is, the more vibrant it will be.”
Don is also an Adjunct Professor of Geography and a Research Associate on the Canada Research Chair’s Rural and Small Town Studies Team. Areas of interest include: citizen participation, sustainable communities, healthy communities and the economic history of northern British Columbia.
Some of his responsibilities include in-community research and community research, and he visits most communities in northern BC and the southern Yukon by truck every year.
Topics from Mr. Manson’s presentation will include: examples of successful resource development policy in BC, how to equip communities to exercise place-based advantages and meet development opportunities and challenges, and what is community development getting ahead of the resource development curve.
