030710_battlebadges2The Dale Moon Classic Battle of the Badges hockey game featured RCMP and Williams Lake Fire Department teams, in a fundraising event for the local Cancer Society. Although the final amount raised will not be revealed until next year's game, it is estimated that several thousand dollars were raised.

The final score was 8-1 in favour of the RCMP. Constable Jason Brown, who played in Saturday's game, said that last year's game resulted in a 5-4 win for the RCMP, with the final goal scored in a shoot out. "We would have liked to see a closer game this year, but it's always a fun game for a good cause," he said.

Six of the RCMP goals were scored by Rob Marshall, Jason Brown, Craig Learning, Todd Learning (two goals), with the final one by Lyle Smith.

"Most of the guys on our team play here in a recreational hockey league, and there were a few officers from nearby detachments who have played in the Battle of the Badges before and joined us on Saturday," he continued.

After the first period, two Timbit teams took to the ice, with Warren Brown and Simon Courtoreille from the RCMP on goal.

This was the 4th annual Battle of the Badges game, renamed this year for the Fire Department's Dale Moon. "We've supported various charities in the past four years," Jason said. He added that the community doesn't always get to see fire fighters and RCMP in optimum circumstances, and this game is a way to change that.

"We try to make it a fun, family night," he said, "and a way for people to come out and enjoy a hockey game."
