The annual Likely slo-pitch tournament this weekend began with the first two teams squaring off at 6:30 am on Saturday. There were 10 teams at the tournament in Likely---three from Prince George, three from Quesnel, three from Williams Lake and one mixed team.

The ‘Lakers’ from Williams Lake came in first, ‘Off Constantly’ from Prince George took second place, ‘Down and Dirty’ from Prince George came in third and the ‘Laminators’ from Quesnel took fourth place.

An interfaith symposium in Williams Lake next week will give local communities a unique opportunity to hear religious scholars from a wide range of faiths, and also to participate in questions, answers and discussions. 

The free event will include refreshments and will be moderated by Williams Lake City Councillor and Deputy Mayor Surinderpal Rathor. 

The religious scholars include Frank J. Austin from Aboriginal faith, Lotte Weber from Buddhism, Reverend Dave Blakely from Christianity, Gian Singh Kotli from Sikhism and Muhammad Afzal Mirza from Islam.

public_commission_legal_aidThe Public Commission on Legal Aid is travelling across the province, seeking input from British Columbians on the future of legal aid. You have a chance to participate, as the Public Commission is holding a Hearing in Williams Lake soon. 

Submissions can be made by organizations or individuals who have had dealings with, thoughts on, or innovative ideas about the provision of legal aid in British Columbia.  Written submissions and in-person presentations will form the basis of a report that will be released to the public and delivered to the governments of British Columbia and Canada.

090310_ball_likelyThere are 12 slow-pitch ball teams stepping up to the plate in Likely this weekend for some live sports entertainment and family fun. The tournament, which includes four Likely teams, is scheduled to start on Saturday September 4 at 6:30pm at Cedar Point Provincial Park and will run until early afternoon on Monday.   

A concession will run throughout the weekend with proceeds going to Camp Likely.

PostHeaderIcon A 'garlicky' good time in Lac La Hache

The  annual South Cariboo Garlic Festival may very well have been the best one yet. Lac La hache made the perfect backdrop for a garlicky good time including live entertainment, face painting for the kids and a garlic peeling & eating contest.

Competitors cooked up a garlic storm that saw Gina Myhill-Jones of 100 Mile House, and her Garlic Shrimp Wonton Soup, awarded the title of 2010 Master Garlic Chef. Marc Stucki's Beef Wellington came in second, followed by Kathleen Daniels' Creamy Garlic Broccoli Salad.

Organizers are already planning and anticipating next year's event.

"Participants are encouraged to have some fun and create a funky new style for themselves on September 19 and show it off during our annual 5 or 10 km walk, run or bike event," said Suzanne Cochrane, Recreation Programmer. "Spike it, color it, add some color, bows, flowers- your creativity is part of the fun."

083110_horsefly_festivalThe annual Horsefly Salmon River Festival begins this Friday, celebrating the return of a million sockeye salmon to their spawning grounds on the Horselfy River. The festival runs from Friday September 4 to Monday September 6, with activities for all ages.

There will be knowledgeable salmon and river interpreters along the river across from the Horsefly Bridge, a lantern-making workshop on Saturday at the Horsefly Community Hall and a family square dance featuring Pharis and Jason Romero on Saturday evening, with caller Merv Meyers.

Lakers Car Club members (Williams Lake, BC) participate in the Quesnel Prospectors Gold Pan City Car Show 2010The Quesnel Prospectors Gold Pan City Car Show was a huge success today.

Mother Nature cooperated by providing warm weather, allowing the large crowds to wander the three streets full of hot rods classic and antique cars, trucks and bikes. The event also provided car owners and enthusiasts alike a chance to mingle and catch up on news.

The second annual 'Taste of the Cariboo' local food festival took place in Boitanio Park in spite of extreme inclement weather that threatened the event on August 26th from 4:30 to dusk. 

The event was held in partnership with “Performances in the Park” and was opened with a blessing and performance by the Williams Lake Pipe Band.

082510_4-H_show_boy_steerAll are invited to attend the 2010 4-H Sale today at the stockyards on Mackenzie Avenue today at 5:15pm.

The event is the grand finale for the week-long show, where young 4-H members throughout the region displayed their projects and showed the hard work, dedication and organization that being a 4-H member instills.

The generosity of the business community is a living tradition at the annual 4-H Show and Sale, and today is expected to be no exception.
