Cariboo Draft Horse and Driving Club seeking a power lift

The Cariboo Draft Horse and Driving Club of 150 Mile House hosts or participates in numerous annual events in Williams Lake and area, including the “Seniors Ride” in June, “Valentines Sleigh Ride” and various parades and other community events, including the upcoming 34th Annual Williams Lake Harvest Fair.
The club took on an important and interesting challenge this year: to raise funds to purchase a wagon that is specifically designed to accommodate persons who are mobility challenged. Sadly, recent events have ended with persons in wheelchairs not receiving rides as the clubs present wagons are not equipped to allow access to those with certain disabilities. The new wagon concept focuses on being inclusive, to provide safe and secure seating, to be comfortable, and to provide ease of access and ready seating adaptability. This new vehicle will have a power lift on the rear to assist persons in wheelchairs, as well as any other persons who are not able to safely and comfortably climb on and off a wagon.
The cost to purchase an appropriate vehicle with delivery and taxes is expected to run as much as $12,000. The Cariboo Draft Horse and Driving Club has been seeking donations since March of 2010.
The club recently received approximately $3,500. through fund-raising in partnership with Williams Lake Wal-Mart Staff and Wal-Mart, Canada. Although not all monies have been raised yet, the club has placed an order and expect delivery of the new wagon in September, in time for the Williams Lake Harvest Fair. The fair will be the club’s first public use of the wagon, providing rides to all visitors at the fair.
