Hey Cariboo, How's Your Music IQ?
by Sherry Day Foster
It was bound to happen here in the deep of our Cariboo Winter. I got curious about Canadian music and musicians.
So as is my usual habit, I brought up Wikipedia and took a quick look-see, hoping my worst doubts would be dissolved. Alas, that was not to be--confirmation was right before my eyes. I know virtually nothing of the roots of Canadian music; subsequently, I was neither surprised nor delighted to discover the first Canadian musician I recognized was Guy Lombardo, born in 1930. Now to the younger generation (say, under thirty), the dude might seem to be old. But in music-years, 1930 is considered "modern".

T’is the season to be merry. And responsible. Operation Red Nose is very successful this year. The number of people using this service has well-surpassed last year’s figures. That means safer streets, safer people and a lot of money not being paid out to traffic courts and ICBC. Good job, Williams Lake and area.
The curtain comes down for the last time on Saturday for the production of Peter Panic! The Musical. If you haven’t seen it yet, it’s wonderful entertainment at a very reasonable price.
The Station House Christmas Market is open every day through December. For a unique gift you must check this out.

Shopping. Shopping. Shopping. That’s what everyone seems to be doing. But remember, anyone who believes that men are the equal of women has never seen a man trying to wrap a Christmas present.
Take some time away from bustling through stores, line-ups and pushy people and relax. Peter Panic! The Musical starts tonight and there is also a special showing of Cycling the Pacific Ring of Fire Part 3…Full Circle! at the Cariboo Cultural Center.
Tomorrow you can take the kids and have a PJ Party with holiday stories and songs and a movie with popcorn.

Thank-you to everyone who has sent in their community events. We have made it very easy to enter your functions in our Event Calendar; all you have to do in click on the big '+' sign on the Events Calendar page and fill in the blanks. Thousands of readers every day check to see what is going on in the Williams Lake area.
You’ve all seen the Williams Lake Community Band play on different occasions. Did you use to play the sax, trombone, trumpet, etc., many years ago and still dream you are making glorious music? Well, dust off that old instrument because practices start tonight.
The holiday season is a great time for eating and some of you might want to do something to lessen the impact of all that food on your waistline. We’ve got Zumba, roller derby, TOPS and square dancing to help you.
The Station House Christmas Craft Market will be open seven days a week in December. There’s an Earth Friendly Holiday Craft Event on Friday and Saturday and a Christmas Tea & Bake Sale at the Museum this Saturday.
What to do in the Cariboo? Lots.

Christmas is coming in just over a month. (Wasn’t it just summer?) Most of the stores have started decorating and there have been lights popping up on houses all over Williams Lake. And the music, beautiful Christmas carols, make shopping even more fun. If you’re not an outdoor enthusiast, there are lots of indoor events to participate in the Cariboo this week.

Never tried square-dancing? It's a lot of fun and beginners can get started tomorrow night.
Williams Lake has incredible support groups. Maybe you know someone who could benefit from some help from others in their situation.

We hope everyone had a safe and happy Halloween night. There are plenty of things to do this week, from regular meetings to the big job fair at TRU, a ski swap or some early Christmas shopping at the Miocene Christmas Market. The Station House Gallery has two great exhibits this week, but I have to say my favourite would be pumpkin chucking at Cataline Elementary School! That is going to be so much fun again this year. Have a wonderful week; keep warm and stay safe.
