Firewatch

cariboo_fire_centre_updateCrews are continuing to make good progress on all fires burning within the Cariboo Fire Centre.

The break in weather provided an opportunity for crews to build and complete guards. Improved visibility has also allowed full utilization of our ground and air suppression resources, which has helped reduce wildfire activity. There is potential for elevated winds this afternoon with the chance of lightning; however, the Cariboo Fire Centre is preparing for this cold front and is taking the necessary precautions. The Cariboo Fire Centre wants to stress that the number of fire fighters has not de-creased and fire crews continue to be backfilled.

Currently, 1701 personnel are actively involved in suppression efforts; three-quarters of which are from BC as required.

Meldrum Complex

 Meldrum Complex is currently estimated at 53,622 hectares in size. Fire fighters are continuing to secure lines by building guards. Crews may be conducting burnoff operations today if the weather permits. These suppression activities will cause smoke columns; smoke may be visible in the Williams Lake area.

Bull Complex

 The Bull Complex is over 34,000 hectares in size. Fire 186 is 15,961.7 hectares and is 95 per cent contained. Fire 234 is 12,213 hectares and is 90 per cent contained. Fire fighters are continuing to reinforce guards and extin-guish hot spots along the perimeters of both fires. The Alexis Lake Road and the Anah Lake Road are now open to the public. No permit is required to travel. Access to the Siwash Bridge is now permitted. The 7000 Road remains closed.

Pelican Complex

 Crews are continuing to make good progress and have increased containment on fires 205 and 299. Fire 205 is currently 43,112 hectares and is 30 per cent contained. Fire 299 is 2,290 hectares and is 20 per cent contained. Fire fighters are continuing to construct guard on the east flank of fire 205. Crews will also be extinguishing hot spots around the perimeter where required. There is an area road restriction order in place from Pelican Lake to Pantage Lake in effect until September 3, 2010 or until lifted. This road restriction is to allow for the safety of the general public and our suppression resources.

Heckman Pass Fire

 The fire has been mapped at 3,086 hectares. Today fire crews will continue to secure the east flank and begin mopping up the south flank. Friday, August 27,will be the last day with full resources on this fire then an Initial Commander and 10 fire fighters will continue patrolling the area. Hwy 20 remains open on both sides of the Anahim Lake area.

Corkscrew Basin

 This fire is burning within and outside of the Itcha Ilgachuz Provincial Park and is estimated in excess of 6034 hec-tares. This fire is currently being monitored by the Incident Management Team working on the Heckman Pass fire, while a Fire Analysis Plan is being completed by fire management specialists in conjunction with BC Parks Land Managers.
