Firewatch

cariboo_fire_centre_updateThanks to favouring weather conditions this weekend, crews were able to regain some ground on fires burning within the Cariboo Fire Centre. All fires received varying amounts of rain, which helped to decrease fire activity and any imme-diate threats to communities and fire fighter safety. The Cariboo Fire Centre wants to remind the public that it is still August and these fires will not be completely out until the season changes. The weekend, though it offered relief, was not enough to end the fire season. We will continue to put resources on existing priority fires and will do so until the fires are officially declared out.

Meldrum Complex

 Crews made good progress on all fires burning within the Meldrum Complex. Crews are continuing to build guards on fire 189 and fire 191, as well as conduct burn-off operations when weather conditions permit. The combined size of all the fires in the area is approximately 52,000 hectares.

Bull Complex

 The Bull Complex is now estimated in excess of 34,000 hectares in size. Fire 186 is 75 per cent contained. Crews are continuing to build guard along the northwest boundary and extinguish hot spots along the perimeter. Improved visibility has allowed full utilization of our suppression resources.

Pelican Complex

 Weather conditions have been favourable, which has allowed better visibility and fire access for crews. Yesterday, some fires within the complex experienced Rank 3 fire conditions with occasional torching, smouldering and creeping. Fire fighters are continuing to build guards, as well as conduct burn-off operations when the opportunity presents itself. There is an area road restriction order in place from Pelican Lake to Pantage Lake in effect until September 3, 2010 or until lifted. This is to allow for the safety of the general public and our suppression resources.

Heckman Pass Fire

 The fire has been mapped at 3,086 hectares . Today fire crews will continue to secure the east flank and begin mopping up the south flank. Highway 20 remains open on both sides of the Anahim Lake area.

Corkscrew Basin

 This fire is burning within and outside of the Itcha Ilgachuz Provincial Park and is estimated in excess of 6000 hec-tares. This fire is currently being monitored by the Incident Management Team working on the Heckman Pass fire, while a Fire Analysis
