Fire crews made excellent progress this weekend on significant wildfires burning near Kluskus and Alexis Creek.
Over one hundred Forest Service staff worked through the weekend, completely containing the Bull Canyon fire west of Alexis Creek. Though steep terrain challenged firefighters, crews were able to build guards by hand and with heavy machinery, stopping the fire’s spread and diminishing fire activity. This fire, discovered July 14, has been mapped at 177 hectares.
The Tsacha Lake fire near Kluskus, 140 kilometres west of Quesnel, is now 90 percent contained. Eighty wildland firefighters are working in conjunction with heavy equipment to build fire guards around the flanks of the fire. Helicopters are dropping water to cool flare-ups within the fire perimeter, and crews are extinguishing hot spots. Today, crews continue to work towards completely containing the 450-hectare fire.
While the Fire Centre has been successful in managing the fires within its jurisdiction, much of the region remains in an extreme fire danger rating. Seventy per cent of wildfires around the province this year have been caused by people, compared to an average of 55 per cent in past years. The Fire Centre urges the public to maintain extreme caution around all sources of heat or flame.
