Business Excellence Awards: Who’s To Impress?
| Business |
By Jason Ryll
The annual Chamber of Commerce Business Excellence Awards is coming up again soon this year. It will undoubtedly be a gala event in the lakecity where some of the community’s business elite will congratulate themselves, and each other, on a job well done.
In a time when the world’s economy has been hard hit by financial meltdowns, bank foreclosures, and a snails-pace slow recovery, the awards show comes at a time when business, especially local business, needs it the most. There is little-to-no immediate financial gain for a business chosen as a recipient of the different category awards. However the impact that the recognition can have on a business can be far reaching.
The benefits are somewhat intangible and cloudy at first, until you realize what it means to the final person in the chain – the customer. Each customer, whether from another business or someone else, has a say in the business excellence awards. That ‘say’ is to let a person or business know that they have accomplished something above the average that is worthy of recognition. They have gone the extra mile in their business, enough to make someone nominate them for an award. It gives a kind of validation to business owners, managers and staff on a job well done.
A business that is chosen as a recipient of an award has worked hard on their own to get there. There is the long road of planning, customer service, research, market surveys, and financials, to name a few. Then, after all the planning and research is done, the business can open its proverbial doors and hope that the customer comes in. For business, every angle of service, marketing and value cannot be overlooked. That business needs to have a very important goal in mind: to impress the customer.
And for the customer it provides a certain amount of confidence in going to the businesses that are nominated for an award. It’s a confidence that they can expect, and hopefully receive, a certain level of professionalism, service and etiquette when dealing with any of those businesses nominated for an award.
So when the Business Excellence Awards are handed out March 13th, it’s not only businesses and owners congratulating themselves. It’s a show of confidence from the community that businesses in Williams Lake have what it takes to do great things, and to validate them on a job well done.
