The one-stop recycling event at Canadian Tire on May 12 has expanded in several directions this year, making it not only a true recycling destination for the day, but a spotlight on local organizations and businesses who specialize in ongoing recycling endeavors and opportunities.

On May 12 people will not only have the opportunity to recycle things like tires, electronics, paint, light bulbs, glass and batteries—they can also refurbish their windshields and recycle books and clothing and support local charities for kids and families.

Daybreak Rotary Club will be on site at Canadian Tire, adding the printed word to recycling options. They are bringing their book sale to the event, where people can drop off books and buy books, with proceeds going to support a range of charitable community projects.

The Daybreak used book sale in Boitanio Mall was extended this year due to popular demand, according to President Shirley-Pat Gale, who added that it is their best book sale in 21 years and their longest-running fundraiser, and that they are extremely pleased to bring it to Canadian Tire’s recycling event.

Another new, unique recycling opportunity on May 12 at Canadian Tire’s giant recycling day will be Speedy Glass and the ‘Glass Medic.’ Speedy Glass Service Centre Manager Darcy Carrier said that they’ll show people that repair is a great option for their windshields instead of replacing them.

“You’ll get to see our exclusive, top-of-the-line ‘Glass Medic’ in action: we’ll do rock chip repairs on the spot for you,” he stated. “This is also our way of giving back to the community: $5 from each repair will go to the Boys and Girls Club in Williams Lake.

“Repairing rock chips in your windshield helps keep you safe, saves you money and definitely highlights the ‘green factor.’”

He explained that your windshield is 30% of the structural integrity of your vehicle, and that letting rock chips spread can not only be a safety issue for sight, it can cause your windshield to fold in a roll-over accident. He added that chip repair is a lot less expensive than paying the deductable and replacing your windshield, and is also a ‘greener’ alternative.

“We’re really excited to be part of the recycling day at Canadian Tire,” he said. “This will be a great event for the whole community.”

Another creative recycling opportunity at the event will be the Big Brothers Big Sisters Purple Bins, where soft goods, such as clothing, bedding and linens, can be dropped off to help support local BBBS programs for kids.

“We’re delighted to be at the event—it’s a context mind-set for recycling. People will remember where to go to recycle and will see how easy, beneficial and convenient it is,” said BBBS Executive Director Lorraine Levitt.

“There are so many places who take recycling that people may not know about. This event isn’t just one-stop recycling for a day. It’s one-stop learning,” she said. “When you’re dropping off a TV set or some paint cans, you’re getting rid of it in a responsible way. When you drop something off at the Purple Bin you’re also getting something back.”

“I think that in Williams Lake we sometimes struggle with our identity; with this giant recycle day here is something we can be proud of and something we can hang our hat on,” stated Brian Stefan, Williams Lake Canadian Tire owner. “This event highlights the stewards who are in our community every day.

“A month from now people will remember where they can take things to be recycled—it takes out the guesswork.

“We want to tell the community that recycling matters—that we can set an example in the province. Our recycling programs are worthwhile for us when it comes to the environment, and when it comes to community support,” he continued.

“Wouldn’t it be great if we became known around the province for something incredibly positive, like recycling? Instead of standing out because of crime statistics, let’s stand out because we care about where we live and where our future generations will live,” he said.

“We know that people want to make a difference and we want to help.”
