Luxury at nature’s doorstep in the south Cariboo

Escaping the hectic pace and demands of city life to complete peace, tranquility and luxurious comfort has drawn travelers from around the world to Sheridan Lake Bed and Breakfast at Nature’s Doorstep in Lone Butte. Owners Deborah and Vance Kroeker have gone the extra hundred miles to ensure that their guests enjoy a unique and unforgettable wilderness experience in the beautiful south Cariboo.
Ten years ago the couple moved from a rat-race city existence to the pristine peace of Lone Butte. They bought raw land and custom-built their house with the dream in mind to someday open a bed and breakfast private suite for guests.
Two skills that come naturally to Deborah and Vance are careful research and customer service—skills that have stood them well from the beginning with the bed and breakfast.
“We stayed in a long list of B&Bs to find out what we wanted and what we didn’t want,” Deborah said.
They found that they didn’t like a designated time for breakfast at someone else’s dining room table with strangers. “We were on vacation and wanted to be able to sleep in and relax.
“We found that we didn’t want cereal and toast for breakfast. We didn’t want to share a bathroom and tiptoe in and out of someone else’s house. We didn’t want to be a guest in a stranger’s home,” she continued.
Based on their research, they built a completely private suite with a dumbwaiter between the main kitchen and the guest suite. She said they researched for a year for perfect gourmet breakfasts, and serve a two-course breakfast according to their guests’ timetable.
(Vance and Deborah make each guest feel welcome at the B&B on the lake.)
The suite has its own private entrance, courtyard, dock and patio, with a BBQ, Wi-Fi, kitchenette, flat screen TV, luxury bath, fireplace and parking area exclusive to the guests in the suite.
The facility is on the south side of the lake with sunshine and a beautiful view; it’s soundproof, luxurious, dog-friendly and comfortable.
Guests come from around the world to enjoy a stay at the affordable, year-round Sheridan Lake Bed and Breakfast. “We’ve had people here from all over Europe, New Zealand, the US and throughout BC,” she explained. “We’re usually fully-booked from May 1 to October 15, and last year we turned down 200 nights.
“Our guests are often big-city people who are sick of their hectic lives and come here for a big wilderness vacation where it’s quiet and isolated, on a pristine lake with gorgeous vistas and wildlife,” she added. “This is a delightful combination of luxury and wilderness where people can enjoy swimming, boating, hiking and fishing, as well as a range of winter sports.”
Here’s what some of their guests have had to say:
“We needed some rest and relaxation and that's just what we got in this beautiful, tranquil setting with five-star accommodation, fabulous two-course breakfasts and welcoming hosts. The fact that this is a pet friendly accommodation meant that our new puppy could accompany us. The lake was at our doorstep and a boat made available for our use.”
“My husband and I cannot say enough about our experience. We are telling everyone we know about the wonderful time we had. The elaborate breakfast was simply amazing. The accommodations are top notch. We felt like we were in a 5-star hotel without the 5-star price tag.”
“This is a very special place. Deb and Vance have created the perfect antidote to hectic city life - serenity, privacy, and comfort - not to mention the hospitality. Deb's breakfasts are unsurpassed and you could not ask for more gracious hosts. We plan to return again in the winter time to see how the seasons change on Sheridan Lake.”
A lifelong nature and wildlife lover, Deborah said that what she loves the most is living in the wilderness and still making wonderful social connections with their guests. Each person has a different social background, culture and a separate story,” she said. “This doesn’t end when they leave—they come as guests and leave as friends.”
