Teena Olson at Fit City Athletica said that the fires and the heavy smoke are depressing for a lot of people. “When you go outside you can’t breathe well and you can’t do the activities you want to do. You have to keep your kids indoors and when they go out, it’s for short periods of time,” she said. “My kids are seven and 12 and they want to be outside all the time but I have to limit it—it’s a big impact.” 

Teena has now been the owner of Fit City Athletica for one year. She said that it’s very satisfying to work in a business that helps people feel better and feel healthy, especially now with the fires and smoke. 

Fit City has air conditioning, private bathrooms, 10 tanning beds, a full line of work-out equipment in a gym with 24-hour access, fitness and weight-loss supplements, unique lines of clothing and accessories, as well as customer service and support that will help you meet your needs. 

“Vitamin D makes people feel better, and if you’re not getting your Vitamin D requirements outside, we have what you need inside,” she said. “People who have a little bit of a tan feel better about themselves. It gives you a happy, healthy glow and helps keeps your spirits up.”  

There are six lay-down and four stand-up tanning beds at Fit City, including a new ‘king-bed’. All tanning beds and booths are comfortable, timed and convenient, and there is a wide range of tanning lotions and products. 

She said that the wide range of clothing in Fit City Athletica is one of the best-kept secrets in the Cariboo, with Karma, Leilani and Buffalo clothing, Guess purses, belts, accessories and more. Customers can find active wear, formal wear, swim wear and casual clothing, and the store is well-known for dresses for all occasions, according to Teena.  

With people feeling anxious, worried or depressed over the fires and the heavy smoke, doing something healthy that makes them feel better is crucial.

“Our gym is very well-equipped with weight training equipment and aerobic machines including two brand new Precor treadmills, two elliptical, three upright and three recumbent bikes and an Expresso personalized, computer-route bike,” she said, adding that a certified fitness trainer is available through Fit City to help customers meet their individual fitness and weight-loss goals. 

Teena said that one of the best things about her job is interacting with customers. She has a background in customer service, but said that it’s a whole new world for her at Fit City. “I enjoy all our customers and we want them all to feel comfortable, inspired and welcome.”
