Where’s the Look - Spring 2010

This spring’s fashion report is showing some exciting trends and real Cariboo-wearable potential. Before I had started to actually search for the latest trends, I began seeing the same fun styles and colours popping out at me in every magazine I flipped through.
Some of the biggest looks to keep an eye out for this spring are pastel colours – think Misty Mints or cotton candy palettes – as well as buttercup yellow, aqua blue and spicy deep red pigments. These dreamy colours give you a chance to look and feel light and feminine; but be sure to stay grounded with a solid wedge or clog-esque shoe.

Another dominant runway style is especially ‘farmer’s daughter’ friendly – denim, denim, and more denim! Whether it’s a dark wash, faded chambray, just a little or all over, it’s hard to go wrong with your Wranglers this season. I like oversized denim shirts-made-dresses with a belt around the waist to give a girly yet tomboy feel.
More looks to go for to switch things up are prints, especially cherries and girly floral, as well as black and white graphic prints; long shorts, knee length seems to be the favourite; tassels, whether they’re on your handbag or your collar; drawstrings and buckles, which are done well on a cropped jacket; open-knit fabrics, meaning knitted with visible gaps in the threads, are a great way to let the spring air keep you at a comfortable temperature. Army-inspired outfits like khaki shorts or coats are another great find, especially if you need a tough fabric. Another big one is ruffles, as well as pleating.
And last, but certainly not least, and what I find most intriguing: underwear as outerwear! This is not as intimidating as it sounds. Although some of the looks on the runway are farfetched, I think that an outfit consisting of a bustier, trousers and a little cardigan would be, well, adorable! This is probably one of the biggest focuses in the fashion world this season but honestly, not always going to be the most sensible, comfort-wise.
I suppose I should also note that fanny packs are back in, but... I mean, really? Fanny packs! You’ll have to sort that one out on your own, as I have never quite understood this trend.
Now that I have outlined some of what’s hot in spring 2010, it is my goal to recreate an outfit found in Milan, New York, and other fashion-housing cities, using local picks you can get to in minutes.
I’d like to specially thank Kim MacDonald, manager of Warehouse One the Jean Store for allowing me to freely try on clothing and take photographs for my article.
Another special thanks to Karen Pelletier, owner of Just Because, for allowing me to try on clothing and take photographs for my article; I also would like to thank Linda Isfeld, manager of Just Because, for assisting me in collaborating outfits. Her knowledge of the clothing, as well as her opinions, were greatly helpful.
Just Because: Ladies’ clothing boutique. Calming decor and crystal chandeliers. Opened in fall 2009, right beside the Post Office. Just Because carries sizes 6 to 20.
