As the sun begins shining ever more brightly and the wind blows away the clouds of winter, we can all shed some layers and have some fun outdoors. This transition means we can pack away our thick jackets and boots, and dig into the boxes of light, colourful threads of spring! Our unpredictable weather gives us a great opportunity to play with different layers, accessories, and shoes.

With last month’s trend article in mind, I’ll help you incorporate all the little details from bangles to bags that make your look unique, and also give you some more spring trend updates.

As you may remember from ‘Where’s the Look’ February 2010, some of the big trends this season are denim, which can be (and should be!) used in many different ways, depending on what feels right for you. More looks that I mentioned were girly, floral prints and bold colourful or black and white graphic prints, light sorbet pastel colors, army-inspired outfits, and ruffles and tassels, which are fun on clothing and on accessories, such as a hand bag.

032210_fashion_tasselMore big styles popping up in my favourite magazines to watch for are sporty, golf and tennis inspired looks (like a head band, jogging clothes and a college sweater around the waist), sheer-near transparent- fabrics, and tribal print; by tribal, I mean any kind of exotic prints you would see on people’s clothing in travels abroad. This look is a big one, as its use is not limited to clothing. Also, I’ve noticed that futuristic metallic fabrics are very popular on the runway; I own a stunning gold, rustic metallic dress, which I found in town at Hairdooz by Natasha (it looks like a million bucks, for about $40!).

Now that you know all about the staple pieces you can use this spring, let’s take it to the next level with all that glitters and puts us apart from one another. Some accessories are timeless, if you ask me. There is always that bracelet, or sentimental gold chain that matches any style phase you’re going through.

But certain things are ever-changing, and trends fade, and that is when it is time for an accessory facelift. This spring, it’s all about light, airy colors, funky bold shapes and delicate details. If you’re looking for a nice new necklace, try out some transparent baubles and beads—like wearing dew drops around your neck! Or, you can have some fun with charms such as little medallions, feathers, hearts- whatever tickles your fancy. More great looks to go for are chunky chains, little meshed chains, and pearls, which are timeless.

One place where I found a great deal of variety was in Ardene’s. I have an adorable charm necklace with birds, dragonflies, a heart and a key that I got at the store. There are always great deals, so you can get three to five items for the price of one!

Tribal styles are something to keep in mind in every category of fashion. Try out some colourful wooden beads or feathers, or perhaps a chunky wooden bangle (I saw some really great organic jewellery like this in the Hobbit House). This tribal look pushes right on through to handbags and shoes—adding beads, studs or feathers to a strappy sandal or heel gives it a whole new dimension.

Speaking of shoes and handbags, there is enough variety of spring styles for both to satisfy all tastes. One favourite shoe is a very high heel, with neutral colors which elongates the leg. If you’re like me and would most likely hurt yourself attempting a sky-high heel, cheat and try a wedge for more support.

Another style of shoe is much more simple and grounded: a clog-esque shoe that will probably prove to be comfy and easy to match to most clothing. This next style I’ve noticed is so ‘Cinderella’—crystal clear pieces and silver, shiny heels—very modern and transitional from day to night wear.

If you’re looking for something sporty, try a shoe with an open toe, perforations (holes), or meshing. Although most of these looks are meant to be in a heel, worn in the big city streets, flats, wedges and kitten heels can make things a lot less complicated and still look great for our more laid-back Cariboo life.

There are so many styles of bags this season, you may already have an old one hidden away that you can reincarnate! First of all, you can choose to have a small satchel bag with a cross body strap, a handbag with medium length straps, or a strapless clutch.

You can choose from a fun, modern tie-dye print or cotton candy colors (like searching for Easter eggs) or tribal print. There are so many fun materials---beach-ready straw bags, gym-ready perforated bags, faux-animal skin such as alligator or snake print, and don’t forget those awesome tassels and ruffles—I doubt you’ll have troubles finding a style you like!

I always have fun learning what is ‘in’, but even more fun learning what is in town! Our local stores have so much to offer, and we’ve got some real gems. Check out what I found this month that are just what the ‘look’ doctor ordered, but without the high-fashion pricetag.

I would like to give a very special thanks to Natasha Stukl for doing my hair and letting me photograph her clothing, and Chad Yuill for taking my photos at ‘Hairdooz by Natasha’ at 12B Broadway Ave. Natasha’s studio is a one stop makeover shop, where you can get your hair cut, coloured and styled. She has two tanning beds, designer clothing and a new apprentice, Chad Yuill, who is learning to cut and style hair. Piercings are also on the way for the shop.

Another great big thank you to Mark Savard, owner of ‘Red Shreds Bike & Board Shed’ (95 1st Ave, across from Haines Office World), for letting me photograph the clothing in his shop, and Megan Chutskoff for photographing me. Mark says, “spring is here; keep it fun and funky! We’re keeping to our roots, and giving smaller home-grown brands more love.” Any outdoor and sporting gear you need, Red Shreds has got it----all styles of bikes, and bike repair; skateboards; kayaks and gear; rock climbing gear, and more!

Last but certainly not least, thank you so much to Marion, Denise and Sandra from Walk-Rite Shoes at 130 Oliver Street, for allowing me to roam the store and take pictures of their amazing shoes! Their extremely knowledgeable staff can help you find the right fit.
